Galcon - Conquer the galaxy in 52 seconds or less on your iPhone

It is the 3rd millenium, and for more than 0.2 seconds the great Thumb has rested immobile watching over the Galconian galaxy. You are the master of triangle-ship kind by the will of the gods, and a master of up to 25 worlds by the might of your inexhaustible isosceles battle fleets. You are the supreme ruler of the triangles, for whom a million shapes are sacrificed every day so that you may never die. In your name, and by the actions of your thumbs mighty triangle-fleets blaze a path to other worlds to lay claim to them in your name, criss crossing the cold vacuum of two dimensional space.

Yet despite your actions, and the multitude of your armies, the cruel scourge of triangular ships of other colors than lime green roves the galaxy. Cold heartless blue, Orange in its proud and haughty majesty, Grey, and worst of all the dark looming presence of Red above it all. To be a triangle in such a time is to live in the cruelest and most unforgiving euclidean geometry imaginable. It is to be one triangle-ship amongst countless hundreds. Forget the power of squares and diamonds amongst the stars, for so many shapes and angles other than circles and triangles have been lost, never to be found again. Forget the promise of peace, and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only GALCON!

What is Galcon?

Galcon is a game which is currently available as Shareware on PC, but has recently become available as an app for iPhone, my post shall describe the version for iPhone, however the PC version is also excellent with its online multiplayer.

Galcon could well be described as a 1 minute 3X space game. eXpand into neutral planets, eXploit their resources to build up vast fleets of triangles and use them to eXterminate your eneamies. The game plays much in the manner of risk, but without any dice rolling.

How does it work?

Tap one of your planets, and then tap a planet of a different color, half the ships from your planet will leave orbit and swarm across the map to attack the enemy world.

Each ship you send to attack will destroy one of your enemies ships, and when you have ships still attacking, while the enemy has none defending the planet becomes yours and switches to your color.

The larger the planet is, the faster it will produce ships, making small planets useful as forward bases and large planets further back in the lines valuable as production centers.

Galcon on iPhone?

Yes indeed, and no more perfect game has been made for the system. You can as you see in the video control the actions just by tapping and dragging on the screen, and the controls are even quicker and more responsive than the video makes it look. It requires planning, reflexes and the ability to adapt quickly and all within a few minutes from the start of the game. It's a little pricey, at $9.99, but in my opinion its the best game available on the iPhone right now.

Game modes?

10 Levels of AI difficulty!

5 Game modes, Normal, Stealth(can't see enemy ships), Beast(enemy is dumb, but begins in control of most of the galaxy), 3-way(two AI foes at once, they fight each other too), vacuum (conquer the whole neutral galaxy within a time limit.

Any useful strategies?

If you tap lots of planets, then tap an eneamy planet, they will all attack together.

If you tap a planet or group of planets, then drag from one to a friendly planet then they will all send ships to reinforce that planet.

Use reinforcement to prevent your planets from falling out of your control, the key to Galcon is outproducing your enemy, and so if planets stay under your control you will build more ships and win.

Attack your enemies early expansion planets if you can, rather than the neutrals. While the neutrals might be less heavily defended, it is more useful to gain production and take it from your eneamy, than just gain production.

Don't ignore the tiny planets. It is useful to have a forward base near the eneamy. They often are defended by only 2 or 3 ships at the start of the game, and a single attack from a medium or bigger planet will bring it under your control. You can then mass ships there using the reinforce commands, giving you a rapid strike fleet right by your enemies valuable large worlds.

Later in the game be sure to keep bringing ships to the front lines. Just like in WW1 victory in the late game is decided by who is in the right place and who can move fastest. If your eneamy sends out his ships, you can enact a quick counterattack from the nearby planet, while reinforcing it from other worlds. The enemies fleet will be shattered by your reinforcements and you will gain control of the worlds he sent the ships from.

What no multiplayer?

Dissapointing I know, it's a higlight of the PC shareware mode. But you can play iPhone galcon on the bus or on BART, or in the bathroom and the touch screen interface really is great. In the blog of the producer, he states his intention to do his level best to add it to the game, and the game has alreay had an update to add the little sounds everyone wanted.
