I have to put two solid black shapes on top of each other and I want the shapes to be outlined in white so you can see them against each other, any suggestions?

double click the layer (or layer -> style) choose "stroke". input amount of stroke. if you want it to be white, go to the color swatch (under fill type, defaults to red). double click the swatch, choose color, hit ok. you can then adjust the layer style by double clicking the layer again.
