Max Bemis's (Say Anything) Solution to Illegal Downloading!
Buy your very own Say Anything song! Written for you, about you, by Max!
In an effort to minimize the gap between music listeners and performers, take up time on warped tour, and find some solution for the fact that anyone can download any of his gosh-darn albums for free, Max came up with a predictably crazy idea in a haze of sleeping medication.
Max has decided to open the door for a limited time to Say Anything fans to submit ONE to TWO paragraphs about an issue they are having, a serious problem they are going through, or even something they just felt should be written about. Max will take two to three days to deliver an acoustic, full length actual Say Anything song based on your experiences and what you submitted! Each song is 100 percent written by Max for YOU, the buyer.
No two songs will be the same. It will also be named after you. Songs can also be written for special situations like anniversaries, engagements or the death of your dog.
Get involved and change how music works!
I'm a Say Anything fan. I think ...Is a Real Boy is one of the best pop-punk albums of the past couple years, but this doesn't really seem right to me. It sounds to me like Max is charging fans 150$ to give him song ideas. For all we know he could record these songs and sell them and make money, while the people who gave this ideas don't see a dime of it. Maybe he won't do this, maybe he will. Do you guys think this is a good way of with illegal downloads and the shrinking power of the music industry?
If he can make a good song/story based off a paragraph given to him I don't see that as exploitation at all. Say Anything is a guilty pleasure of mine. . .so I'd say it's a good move. If anything it's an interesting concept.

If he is only charging $150 per song, and this is truly an endeavor to make money, I think it's beyond "for all we know..." that there will be an attempt to sell the songs. Ideas are cheap. Making music people are willing to purchase is slightly harder.

I love Say Anything, I really do, but Max Is a bipolar whackjob who probably spends his entire time hopped up on anti-depressants. He makes good music (Except IDOTG, but lets ignore that) but I really wouldn't be taking anything he says seriously.

I listen to people all the time and incorporate some of the stuff I see them do or hear them say into my writing. If I ever get published, do I owe these people royalties?
As for the $150 thing, this whole thing is analogous to various other vanity industries.
There's not a single dishonest or immoral or bad thing about this, even if he winds up making a box set of "Songs of Wow and Woe" and puts 25 of these tracks on the CD and nothing else, which he probably will.
Depending on quality this might be pretty awesome. 150$ for a personalized song to your beloved by a famous person is pretty damned cheap in the grand scheme of things.

IDOTG is good.
Very good. Much better than ...is a real boy
I wouldn't say it's much better. I really like them both, but ...is a Real Boy is slightly above In Defense of the Genre in my book simply because of the amount of songs I really like on either album.
