So, the other night I went and saw NIN live at a local casino. The casino was shitty, and my seats were in the nosebleeds.
But holy fucking god was it great. Everysong was dead on, and I didn't like Ghosts 'till I heard it live. Now it's amazing to me. And all this happens to me in a shitty casino!
And oh god. The time I saw Local H on an assfuckin' boat! I've never seen a man struck with a guitar neck like that. And then Scott cussing out the sound guy for fucking up repeatedly. The sounds and lights of the boat reflecting off the Hudson River. And the drunks trying to touch the band. It was amazingly fun and the best $25 I've ever spent.
So basically, tell me about the best fucking concert you've gone to, and what made it so awesome.
Concerts are what make music for me, if I never could see a band live I'd never fully appreciate the music.
Horropops when they came to P-cola in 2005. I saw them again in 2006 but the first time was the best; we were right up front in this kickass bar and had an awesome view of the dancers and everyone. The opening bands were pretty great as well and the crowd was full of awesome people.
It wasn't nearly as big as the AFI concert I saw but it was way more fun.
Best concert I've been to was a Nightwish concert here a few months ago. Hearing their new lead singer tear into their old stuff was amazing. Made me really believe in the new form of the band. It doesn't hurt that the crowd at the Starlite room is always fantastic. I've never felt like I got ripped off when I go to concerts there.
On a more sour note, I saw the NIN concert at Rexall Place here just last month and I thought it was pretty crap, but that's probably because of the very lame crowd. Trent did make an effort, but it's hard to have a good concert when the crowd won't even clap in time when prompted by the band. Low audience participation kills a concert for me. It's all about the band feeding off of the vibe of the crowd, the crowd feeding off of that, and just spinning up into insane heights of screaming-awesome music.
I saw NIN in Winnipeg this tour, right on the rail in front of Robin motherfuckin' Finck. It was the best show I've been to. Just... everything about it was perfect. Apparently it was tame for a NIN show but this was the first time I've seen them so I was glad to not get killed on the floor, and from what I could tell the crowd was really in to it (except for maybe the Ghosts stuff. I liked it though). Closing with In This Twilight was brilliant.
Also last year I got to see B.B King and it was amazing. It is like watching your grandpa on stage if your grandpa is black and a legendary blues musician and also an awesome storyteller. It was in the auditorium too so it was a nice seated show with great sound quality where you could just relax and enjoy the music (unlike NIN where although I would like to relax and enjoy the music, part of the fun is just the raw energy and the jumping around and yelling). Also I'm pretty sure I was the youngest person there because everyone else was like 40+.
Oooh, I saw Pearl Jam too, when they came to Thunder Bay in '05 (I still can't fucking believe they came here). It was an amazing show even if the arena was shitty and everyone was drenched in sweat 2 songs in. I have a framed poster and a t-shirt and the concert bootleg.
Speaking of which, Pearl Jam concert posters are so awesome.
Best concert was Coachella '06. A day full of new and awesome music, topped off my mother fucking Tool! Maynard walks onstage in cowboy boots, jeans with a big ass belt buckle, and a bigass cowboy hat. He then proceeds to tell about the new CD, and says ah fuck, you'll just download it anyways. And then they ripped shit up. Right before seeing Tool, I saw Coheed and Cambria, and watching Claudio work that guitar is amazing, and his hair is just slightly mesmerizing lol.
Notable highlights, saw a big punk show on New Years Eve '04. I remember Rufio and Yellowcard play, but not much else, except Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies had top billing. I almost caught a drumstick, and then ended the night with Auld Langs Eye. Rock.

You should have seen Tool on the Lateralus tour. That was the freakiest shit I've ever seen in person. It's bad enough to be in an altered state, but then dancers start hanging from the ceiling and some bizarre shit plays on the screens and the band is playing behind some curtains and you have no clue what the hell is going on.
So, the other night I went and saw NIN live at a local casino.
Are you talking about the Mohegan Sun Arena? I live about 20-25 minutes from there and almost saw Stone Temple Pilots at the venue during memorial day weekend but saw them the day before at the Oakland Theater which was an awesome show. I had also seen Scott Weiland when he was in Velvet Revolver last year in August when they were touring with Alice in Chains (also another memorable show).
Im debating whether to see Motley Crue at that place or at the Tweeter Center in mansfield MA (where i saw VR and AiC) later this month.
I've also been to a handful of local/small scale shows and the Bamboozle Festival this year featuring various bands, all were pretty great shows.
I saw a 5-hour Dream Theater concert. I felt like the world went away, and the only thing in existence was the band, stage, and people around me. Once of the most incredible experiences I've ever had.

Yup, I HATE Mohegan with a passion. Not letting me go anywhere since I'm 18, and shitty layout. Signs are nice and helpful, Indians!
The verticallity of the arena makes me quesy.
Local hardcore shows here in Brooklyn have pretty insane crowds as well. People moshing with ski masks on, etc. Like, most concerts have mosh pits, designated areas for people to mosh, but at hardcore shows here, the entire audience is just hyper, sweaty motherfuckers shoving the hell out of each other to angry music.

I'll tell ya, there is not a band on earth that puts on a better show than Local H. Best one I've see was when the opening band's drummer broke his hand, so Scott came out early and did a solo set. Then H did an extra long set with an extra long encore.
If any of you have a chance to see Local H, do it, because they will absolutely blow you away. Brian is such an amazing drummer, he pounds the shit out of the drums like no one else I've ever seen.
I was going to see NIN tonight but the show got cancelled. But the Fragility 2.0 tour was nothing short of amazing.
Other great live acts:
The Pixies
The Toadies
The Mountain Goats
Radiohead. Hands down. Even though it was at Nissan in VA and it was pouring so I was soaked to the bone before I got to my seat.
The light-show was AMAZING. I'm not one to care about lasers and strobes and other shit like that. But they had these giant tubes hanging from the rafters down to the stage, and they basically framed the band so that it looked like they were on a much smaller stage. These things must have been filled with LEDs or something, but they flashed and strobed and changed color and made crazy checker patterns and all kinds of other stuff, all to the beat of the music. I would have loved that concert even if I was deaf. It was like what I imagine a really good acid trip would look like, while listening to Radiohead.
It was also very cool because when they played "Everything in it's Right Place," rather than using pre-recorded tracks for all the weird techno stuff, Thom Yorke sat down at a mixing board and spend a couple minutes recording loops for the song right there. That was very neat.
Where are you exactly? Local H is playing Fargo, Omaha, Portland, Seattle, Salt Lake, Denver, and some other places next tour. Problem is they are co-headlining with Electric 6.
Also the Toadies are back together and touring again.

Yeah, they have a ton up there. A couple months back they played a week long residency at the Beat Kitchen where each night they played one of their albums all the way through, except for one night where they played unreleased tracks and B-sides and stuff. Those would be a good place to start.

I saw Death from Above 1979 in this crappy little bar here in Ottawa just before they got some mainstream success. I hadn't really heard them before but my gf dragged me to the show. The two of them on a small stage, just hammering away. I was totally blown away.
The Pat Metheny Group is also fantastic in concert. I've seen him and the group a few times, but the best was during The Way Up tour. They played the entire The Way Up album (it's one long piece). Then a whole bunch of other tracks. The show was easily close to three hours long and they didn't stop for a second. So good.
Recently I saw Hayden in this older church here in Ottawa. He always does a great show but the accoustics were so unbelieveable in this church. And Basia Bulat opened for him, so that made the show even better.
But Radiohead next friday..... I'm sure that'll be up there.
Proto on
and her knees up on the glove compartment
took out her barrettes and her hair spilled out like rootbeer
I've seen two concerts that I thought were amazing.
1) Yo-Yo Ma. But I guess we're talking more of the fucking rocking, here.
2) Porcupine Tree. It was fucking great, except for the encore they played Halo instead of Trains. What the fuck, fuck you guy who kept yelling "HALOOOO HALLOOOOOO"
Open Car is about 1000% better live, for the record.
I saw Weezer in 2000 when they did a small tour after being on hiatus (and presumed dead) for years. It was like seeing an old friend rise from the dead but instead of eating your brains, he plays a rock concert that starts with My Name is Jonas and then gets heavier and heavier. The crowd was mental. If you told me that night that Weezer were just about to start sucking for the next decade, I would have slapped your stupid mouth. But you would've been right. Sorry about that.
Yeah, I saw NiN the other week. I also saw Tom Petty, Coldplay, Wolfmother, Jay-Z, NERD, the Flaming Lips, Metric, Death Cab For Cutie, Vampire Weekend, and about a dozen other amazing acts. For 300 dollars.
There was all this hype about how there would be tons of security -- every cooler searched, police road checks, that kind of thing. So we decided it would be better to just bring those because they're a lot easier to conceal, and just bend over and pay whatever they were charging for alcohol at the show.
There were signs all the way up the highway: "Special event, expect police road checks." There were none. And then we got there, and we basically walked right in. Very little security, no crowd control, staff was completely disorganized, and they didn't even scan our tickets. Some dude came up to us in the parking lot, tore the barcodes off, and gave us wristbands in exchange. We could have gotten in for free. Apart from having to wait in line for 2 hours to park our car, and then standing for another 2 hours to get on the bus to take us to the festival, that was the extent of our difficulties getting in. So we got up bright and early the next morning, drove into town and filled a couple coolers with booze, which we again carried into the campsite with no difficulty.
It turned out, several of the world-class DJs that had been announced -- including The Crystal Method and DJ Shadow -- would be playing inside a 2500-person Bacardi B-Live tent. Potentially 40,000 people paid hundreds of dollars under the impression that they would get to see these acts. There was a five-hour lineup to get into the tent, so you can probably imagine how some of those in the line reacted when they stopped letting people in.
The campsite was a gong show, everyone was wasted, but apart from the one incident at the Bacardi tent, amazingly very well behaved. And the music was awesome.

Five Iron Frenzy at the first(and last) Uproar Music Festival in Kissimmee. So much love.
Reese gave the crowd a mattress to surf on.
And random peanut butter cups.
(Also, his side project band, Brave Saint Saturn, were the openers, who warned everyone not to stay for FIF since they sucked.)
I later saw them when they played Warped Tour, but it wasn't quite as awesome.
(New Found Glory stole the show there.)
I wish I could say it was BT at Ultra Music Festival, but someone had stolen all his gear the night before. Roni Size / Represent and some local break artists called Prizm & Eclipse made up for that, at least.

I don't care if it was a hub of commercialism, it was spectacular fun. Someone was taken to the hospital before the gates even opened.

Last summer, Coney Island, outdoor concert, right on the beach, it was lightly raining, everyone was dancing.
