This game is the spiritual successor to Bangai-o, and is about a tiny giant robot that fights.

It comes out in on August 12th, 2008.

It will be awesome.

I have never heard of Bangai-O. Could you give me some more info than a huge image of a robot and a horrible seizure inducing trailer?

Not really. That's pretty much it. Except that Bangai-O is best described by the word "shooter-gasm."

I've never heard of this series. I don't know how to "bangai-o".

That drawing is pretty awesome though. Thanks for the new desktop background.

    Just a few more weeks.
This needs to be out yesterday, really.

And to the baffled people: it's a game by Treasure. What more do you need to know?

Oh, fine. Alternative review, in a prose style rather clearer than that of Tim Rogers:

Because they're awesome. Outside of Stretch panic and the "new" Silpheed, most of their games are amazing fun. Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Bangai-O, Gradius V, Mischief Makers, Light Crusader, Dynamite Headdy, Sin & Punishment, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, Silhouette Mirage...

Do I really need to continue?

The vast majority of their games have been of exceedingly good quality, many of them considered to be true classics of the platforms of their release. In fact, I can't even think of a single Treasure game that wasn't good.

Stretch Panic was pretty atrocious. Also, Silpheed could be considered average if you wanted to be extremely generous.

    Otherwise, they are gold.

Stretch Panic is not that bad, actually.
It is at least interesting, and some of the bosses are clever.
    It just feels unfinished.

Bangai-Oh was pretty great. The story was silly, the shmup action was pretty intense (dear god the last level), and it was very replayable. This game might make me crack open my DS again.

Comes out the day after my birthday. Best present ever.

This'll do nicely to replace my absent DC copy.

I hope the translation's just as good as the original's(re: nonsensical).

This one doesn't really have any story outside of the tutorial.

And that's sort of how I consider it to be a spiritual successor. It's got a really different structure, story, and everything from the original. I would say it exists in an entirely different space.

Also, forget GTA, MGS, Braid, or whatever: this is the real 2008 GOTY.

honestly i dont see this really working very well on the DS. also all of treasure's handheld offerings thus far have completely failed to impress me.

everyone really loved astroboy and gunstar super heroes from my memory, and i didnt like either of those much so i dunno. people lose critical abilities when it comes to treasure games, it seems.

I didn't think astroboy was that great myself, although I did like a lot of things about it.

This game looks like treasure's best yet, if you ask me.

And I think Ikaruga is practically a pinnacle of something, although I'm not quite sure what.

Ever since getting back into shmups, every time I see a video or something of a really hard game, I see it as a challenge.

Especially when it comes to Treasure. Because most of their games are difficult, but in a fair, rather than cheap way.

Bangai-O was pretty easy (and extremely fun) I suck at shumups and I was able to beat it. I'll probably end up getting this eventually though I really do wish it was coming out on a console rather than the DS.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Pretty much. The thing about Bangai-O is that the more recklessly you play it, the easier it gets. The entire point of the game is just to go all out and throw yourself into the middle of enemy fire because that's the only way you can use your weapons at full power. As long as you don't somehow box yourself into a corner, there's no way you can lose. It's pretty awesome.

I've heard that the levels in Spirits are generally shorter and more varied in gameplay mechanics. It's been described as "Wario Ware for twitch action gamers" by a few people and that sounds neat.

I remember back when I first saw it and bought the DC game on impulse. I had no idea what it was about. From the cover I thought it was going to be a serious Gundam'ish mech game.

I've never been so happy to have been so wrong.

The sequel's presentation seems promising so far. Behold, the comedic stylings of Yaiman:
The tutorial in Bangai-O Spirits is pretty boring. However, unlike an actual school, the long-winded tutorial in Bangai-O Spirits teaches you how to be objectively awesome. Each tutorial stage opens with a dialogue between three characters — a commander with an eyepatch, a young girl with large breasts, and a too-cool youth in a hip military uniform. In addition to teaching you how to use weapons, the commander also manages to enrage the cool youth: as the tutorials get more complicated and wordy, toward the end, the kid literally says that he didn’t realize he signed up for “an actual robot anime” — he just thought the robot and the anime characters on the box were there to draw in anime fans. The professor then gets defensive, insinuating that the end of Evangelion was “the best part”. Not making this up! When you beat the tutorial, the commander says, “We’ve defeated the Tutorial Army!” And the kid says, “That was fast. If we sell this game back now, do you think we can get at least 3,500 yen for it?”
I just revisited the instruction manual and read the profiles of the three “characters” in the “story” mode. It says of Ruri, the girl, that it “seems as though she’s not in love with Masato”. It says of Masato, the boy, that it “seems as though he’s not Ruri’s brother”.
