Okay. So. Between drummers counting down to the start of the opening ceremony:
And incredible pyrotechnics:
And other magnificent displays of grandeur:
And of course the flying torchbearer:
The Olympic Games are underway!
So yeah we all know there's a host of craziness surrounding the Olympics in Beijing. From political activism to the overstated importance of the torch relay to the concern about how China's gonna look to the rest of the world, yadda yadda yadda, we get it, ok, China's under a lot of stress and scrutiny and expectations are so high.
I am all very indifferent to all this, having consistently viewed the Olympics as being purely a sporting event. I love me some sports, and I loooooooooove me some Olympics, so here, good people, is your eye into the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

I am so tempted to copy and paste my entire volleyball commentary from the other thread, because shit that was fun to write
Thank you.
The Russian coach is an IDIOT. He subs players in an out so fucking fast that no one has any time to get accustomed to the game, no one has any time to adjust to the atmosphere, they step off the bench cold, stay that way, and then get pulled off before they have the chance to get warm. Fucking stupid. No chance for the Russians to build any semblance of momentum.
Brazil team is flying high (literally), with an incredible libero (Fabi, she is adorable) and an even better sense of teamwork and team synergy. Their teamwork is flawless, their mechanics perfect. They didn't lost momentum even once during this whole match so I can't speak for the ability to build it up, but they sure as shit are good at holding it. They did not give the Russians a damn inch in this match and I am incredibly impressed with their ace performance from start to finish.
what a boring match!

I think Nigeria and the US are in different pools for women but I'm pretty sure they play each other in the men's prelims
...
yup, Men's Football, Nigeria v. USA, Aug 13 at 17:00 local time
seriously, IT IS PRETTY WHEN IT GLOWS BLUE THE RAINBOW MOTIF IS NOT NECESSARY
Sorry bout that.
That isn't photoshopped, I can tell by the carrots and because I've seen quite a few tops during my time.
everyone come to my house, there's a great sand court and i got this volleyball
Now they need a draw against Nigeria but they won't have either Adu or Bradley playing.
If you can and are a fan of volleyball at all, I highly recommend watching the Japanese women play. They are fast and while they suck at blocking and lack attack power they are incredible at scooping just about everything up and getting to every single ball. They are fucking everywhere and it is incredible to watch.
the best part was the us purposefully gettin yellow cards while they were in the lead to save up for the next stage and whoops

China v. Cuba; August 13, 20:00 local time
A lot of people are predicting that this will be a preview of the final game, which I hope to god is the match played in the final. China won the gold last time around in Athens but over the last few years has been plagued by injuries, leading to disappointment at the World Grand Prix. With Cuba as always a strong rival, particularly in their incredible offense and blocking (and, let's admit it, height advantage) and with China's home-ground advantage, we can only expect great things to come from this match. Cuba has thus far only lost one set, and that was to the Polish, the same team to have taken the only lost set off of China.
China v. USA
August 15, 20:00 local time
After the USA crushed Japan 3-1 and in turn got crushed by Cuba 0-3, the USA team has had trouble getting it together. This game will prove interesting simply because both teams are notorious for their trouble in rebuilding lost momentum in a game, so in the end, whoever gets it will be playing as hard as they can to keep it. Both teams know how to use it to their advantage, so expect strong moves from the very beginning; the USA to scare the Chinese, the Chinese to prevent losing face.
Cuba v. Japan
August 15, 22:00 local time
I just want to see Cuba's offense go up against Japan's incredible on-court defense. Japan as we all know has a terrible blocking record but they will just not let a ball touch the ground. Should make for a good match, given Cuba's talented placement and incredible power.
Italy v. Brazil
August 17, 14:30 local time
Every time I have seen the Brazilians play thus far I have been simply amazed at their team synergy and incredible morale. No bad move goes exaggerated; they rally quickly and on top of that their raw skills are on-par with what we've seen from the other big guns. I have not seen much from Italy, but they seem to be performing well enough that they might be able to actually take a set from Brazil.
China v. Japan
August 17, 20:00 local time
Old political rivals? Not so much. More like Japan's libero Sano vs. the Chinese frontliners. China's as good with placement and hard hits as Cuba, but they are easily thrown off when the team tosses back a flawless defense in the face of their tough moves. This will make for an excellent face-off.

Yes.
I am a huge fan of FFX, and even I think that's bad.
Blitzball would be amazing if we could do it
I love dhow it was never explained why people can breathe underwater in FFX
well, there is a line of science exploring super oxygen-saturated water for humans to breathe while underwater, which is mainly so man can go deeper into the ocean without having to have foot-thick glass.
not a huge leap.
In a world of magic, monsters, dragons, and flying boats you worry about that?
