This didn't seem right for G&T, so my apologies if it doesn't belong here.
I've recently been getting back into the Metal Gear Solid series, and I had a question about the game order and the plot impact thereof.
i've played MGS from the first one up through Snake Eater at this point, and I've all set to dive into MGS4. However, I guess the next game in the series is Portable Ops. I've picked up the game and played it, and really struggled to get into it, but I've not been able to. The Portable Ops experience is just frustrating to me, and it feels like a chore to play. I've gotten up to the nuclear warhead storage facility, but haven't been able to push past that.
How critical is this game to the plot of the series? Will skipping it and going right to MGS4 leave huge gaps in the plot? Personally, I suffer through bad gameplay all the time, gladly, if the story is worth it. So far the payoff in Portable Ops has been minimal when it comes to interesting plot, in my opinion. Should I stick it out? Or move on?
It's a highly subjective question, I realize, but I'm interested in opinions on the matter. Thanks in advance.

Thus, you can not miss the general gist of the plot, and get onto a game you probably will like more.
You don't know that, man!
But in all seriousness, your suggestion about a plot summary is probably the best one. I was just wondering if there are any seriously dynamic moments, plot wise, best delivered through the gameplay. I almost went to a synopsis for Snake Eater (because I had no way to play the game), but I'm glad I didn't becuase of how the plot was presented in the game.
Portable Ops has just been a tremendous 'meh' in terms of that presentation so far. I didn't know if it heated up later or not. I'll probably just give it a miss.
No, go ahead and enjoy MGS4
A longer (but still fairly short) answer...
There are a few moments that trail into useful stuff for MGS4, but the majority of it is rooted in the PS1/2 games.
