Revisiting Sid Meier's Colonization (1994)

Anyone remember this game?

I've tried reinstalling it on my PC, which runs Windows XP Pro, but it doesn't run. I've got a few more things to try, though, and in the meantime, thought I'd ask if anyone here remembers playing this game, or has tried it again recently.

It's pretty old, game-wise, but I remember it being incredibly addictive. Sometimes simplicity can work for an early game more than the complexities of later releases -- I thought the various Civilization games were fun, but not quite as lasting in terms of addictive fun as Colonization.

Thoughts?

You are aware a sequel of sorts (basically Civ IV modded into Colonization) is slated for release soon right?

Is there a release date for the new Colonization beyond "Fall?"

Yeah, that's part of why I'm looking up the old one again. I've seen the new one, images etc., and to be honest it looks like Civ IV with more focus on boats. (As you say, Civ IV modded into Colonization). It looks cool, and maybe worth a demo play, but... the old one has such charm. Maybe it's nostalgia? I was like 10 when I played it, maybe that's it.

Is a good way to run older games on modern PCs. I use it to run Civ at work because the computers here are crap, and I have lots of free time at the moment.

I've always preferred the original Civ to all the sequels. I like the very basic strategy that was involved, and didn't care for the extra complexity that was added later. Although, I hate losing my Tank to a damn Militia.

Which version do you have that you're trying to run? I believe there was a dos version and a windows version - the windows one I have no (ok, very few for that old of a game) problems running in XP, though I think you need to download some sort of patch (that was originally a patch to make it work in windows 95... I believe it was just a sound file replacement though)

I'll try this, thanks. And if not, I'll be asking about that patch, Gdiguy.

I've never actually played the original Civ, only III and IV. Perhaps I'll give it a whirl, esp. if I can get Colonization working with dosbox. For some reason today I'm full of all this nostalgia for the games I played when I was like 9 or 10, and I have no idea why. Kids these days... so spoiled with their 3D graphics and their online multiplayer modes. ;) I remember having to play Lords of the Realm multiplayer with my sister by actually getting up from the computer and leaving the room, so she could go in and play her turn on that same computer.

Hmm. I managed to get it to install, only to realize this isn't the game I meant. The one I was thinking of was Merchant Colony, which was released back in 91 -- which explains why I remember being so young when I played it. It's pretty simplistic, but fun. Nostalgia, wahoo.

Also, Mouschi, that's awesome. Gonna download when I get home, thanks for the find.
