So, me and a friend have decided to road trip from Canada to California. We are leaving from Regina, SK and heading south. Our plan is basically to drive down to LA, or somewhere in that vicinity and just enjoy the sights and see what there is to do. The first stretch of road will be the 15 from Great Falls, MT to Salt Lake City, UT. From there we plan to head through Nevada and see Reno, then go through Sacramento until we hit San Francisco. After that we aren't really sure, probably just drive along the coast and eventually just head back up to Canada.
We are pretty much leaving everything open ended and plan on doing a lot of driving and a lot of camping. What I am wondering is if anyone has any suggestions on any "can't miss" attractions along the way, or in general any points of interest or things to do in these cities. I apologize if this seems like too broad of a question, if you need any more info please ask.
there is some cool stuff in Southern Utah, like Monument Valley
This is pretty much exactly what I am looking for. That place looks so amazing but probably too far off of course for us. We are looking for cool places to go in the main cities as well as good hiking areas in the country, or places that are just breathtaking like this Monument Valley. We will probably be seeing some amazing sights just on the drive compared to what we are used to here, but it would be a shame to know that we just missed something amazing due to not knowing it existed. Also, if anyone knows of some good wineries along the California coast that would be good as my friend is pretty excited to visit some.
It will be a few hours out of your way, but I would recommend stopping by Solvang. It's just north of LA near Santa Barbara. It's got lots of wineries in the vicinity and is a cute place to stop for a day. Keep in mind it will be hot there.
For a little shorter detour (about 30 minutes from Salt Lake), consider some of the hiking and biking in Park City. Good stuff, near some awesome restaurants and bars.
There isn't a lot tourism-wise in Salt Lake proper. There is the LDS temple square, which is pretty cool looking. There is the new(ish) Gateway mall downtown has some good eats. I'm a big fan of the University of Utah art museum. Depending on when you're going, you may be able to catch the Monet to Picasso exhibit.

EDIT: If you don't mind taking a huge, huge detour, there is some cool stuff in Southern Utah, like Monument Valley
