I think I broke Firefox (Recommend some addons?)

I've only recently started using Firefox and I was looking into some addons just now. Problem is, my back/forward buttons are now permanently grayed out... I disabled all the new addons besides google toolbar because I had that working just fine before this problem, but that didn't fix anything.

I was about to compile a list of the addons I got but apparently my File/edit/view/etc menus are grayed out too unless i restart Firefox.

Help? =(

Edit: I only noticed this after I right clicked a toolbar and went to customize in hopes of saving some space, maybe it's related?

I'd love to be the one disappoint you when I don't fall down

interesting. not a problem I've run into. do you have some option enabled to not save your browser history? without a browser history, you can't go back. hit ctrl-h - is it empty?

Make sure the addons are compatible with the current version of Firefox that you are using.

I'd recommend a reinstall since it doesn't take that long.

Or I'd try to reset firefox's profile first.

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles

Scroll down to find if you're using Vista or other Windows OS to start i tup. If you can, reset the profile to the default one or delete the default one and make a new default.

Otherwise, you could just mess with it manually...

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles

If you're running OS X, you can do the same thing, but you'll need different instructions.
    ./firefox -profilemanager

    or...
Use terminal to enter your applications folder, and then firefox.app. Go in to your profiles folder and just delete the folders to remake a new default profile.

Sorry if I'm unclear, you can just search for it on google too. Mozilla has pretty good documentation.

Can't you start Firefox in safe mode?

If you're having trouble with it I would consider just removing firefox completely and clear out any addons and just download it again. It shouldn't really be a big deal to just start over and be more careful with the addons and settings.
Of all the programs to break, firefox has got to be one of the easiest to just trash and reinstall.

    Reinstalling fixed it, thanks.
I'm gonna go ahead and avoid the novelty of addons unless you guys have some good ones to recommend.

Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper, Glasser (only if you're in Vista and using Aero), Session Manager, Quick Restart, Tabs Open Relative, Hide Menubar and Foxmarks. oldbar compactifies the urlbar dropdown and KeyScrambler's a good one if you're slightly paranoid.

I personally can't live without mouse gestures, but they're an acquired taste.

    Seconded.
Also, Morning Coffee. So handy if you have regular websites to check each day.

Ditto. Mouse Gestures Redox is the one I'm using w/ FF 3, I can't live without it. I love the quick right-click/left-click to go back.

The others I can't live without:
    Adblock
    Flashblock
Greasemonkey (although I use this one less and less)
    IE Tab
    Reload Every

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
