Things to do in Banff, AB Canada, When You're Not Dead
Heading up to America's hat at the end of the week. The girlfriend has been to Banff, but I haven't. Anyone have any good, bad, or indifferent experiences up there? What are the must see's, where are the must eats, and any general tips?
We're mostly car camping, we've got spots reserved right outside of Banff and then up at the Lake Louise campground (2 nights near town, 3 nights at the lake).
Well, there are a bunch of good places to eat there and it all depends of what type of food you like. I like the Old spaghetti factory as the prices are pretty reasonable. I like to hike up there as there are some beautiful trails through the mountains and finish my day at the hot springs.
It's been around 15 years since I've been up there, but here's what I remember about Banff:
1. Lots of large herbivorous wildlife. We saw bison, elk, and mountain sheep.
2. Even though it's summer, you might be able to access upper areas of ski resorts by chairlift. We did this years and years ago. Makes for some interesting hiking.
3. IIRC, there are two routes between Banff and Lake Louise. One is shorter with less scenery, and one is longer with more scenery.
Granted, all this info is pretty old, and I don't really remember much of the town.
Also, depending on where you're coming from, make sure you know the route. On my family's second trip up, we missed a turn at night and ended up on the wrong side of the mountains, so we were forced to backtrack about 75 miles once Dad figured out we were on the wrong road.

When you're a spy, it's a good idea to give away your trade secrets in a voiceover on a TV show.
The main street is pretty nice if you have never been. Lots of little shops and such to look around at. The Banff Grizzly House is a pretty interesting place to go eat and apparently their is a good sushi place there, though I never get to it.
Definitely go see the water falls, they are nice. It's just generally a beautiful area.
