Xbox 360 - I read that some saves are locked?

I'd like to upgrade to a 120 gig HDD but I've heard that some saves are locked, like DOAX2 and Forza 2? Is this true? Any legitimate/legal (only!) workaround or anything? Is there a list of games like this?

I haven't heard anything about this. You could try going to Gamestop and buying a used memory card on the cheap. Transfer the saves over and you'll soon find out if they're locked. They'll give you a refund on it as long as you bring it back with a receipt within a week.

Some are locked and can't be transferred off the device you saved to, period. Viva Pinata, for one.

I believe (and you should probably ask about this on the XBOX.com forums for confirmation) that even locked saves will transfer to the 120 GB hard drive if you use the transfer cable that comes with the new drive, because the process for transferring all your data is destructive, in that once everything has been transferred to the new drive, the old drive is wiped. This is not the same as copying saves over to a memory card, so the test that theclam suggests might not be a valid one (meaning that even if you can't transfer locked saves to a memory card, you can probably still move them over to the new 120 GB drive, as long as you understand that it's a one-way process.
