What movie/TV show/comic to read/watch?

kathoskathos Registered User regular
edited August 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
So my favourite part of Star Wars (the whole saga) was the Clone Wars TV series because there was more focus on the Clone troopers, which in turn got me into the books (they were of fanfic quality, but I'll keep reading). I got into my friend's Hellboy comics and I was more interested in the BPRD and the 1942 line of comics instead of the ones concentrating on Hellboy. And in his Star Wars comics I enjoyed the ones with the individual Jedis' stories more interesting to me than the ones with the stock characters from the main story.

So any movies, shows or comics to pick up? I'm not into books enough to read through it (university books keep me busy enough), so I've been "currently reading through" I Am Legend for almost a year now, I get by a chapter or so every once in a while before I put it down.

I just need something interesting to get into 'cause I've got this job that requires me to basically sit there and do nothing all day (I work for the local government ;)) but make sure the this town o-mine's parks are filled with trees and flowers.

Firefly. I don't care if you think it won't appeal to you, watch Firefly, and watch it now.

    It's a swashbuckling space adventure.

    Pick upa couple of classics...?

    Watchmen.
Some of the good Batman stories.
    Band of Brothers
Firefly and Serenity (ANTV is correct)

all of those are worth investments.

Scrubs is surprisingly good for a standard 30 minute sitcom. I recently watched seasons 1-6 and was not disappointed. The humor picks up noticeably around season 3, although that's at the same time they start hitting the drama angle along with the comedy that turned quite a few people off.

Dexter - Amazing show. Michael Hall is the man.
Set and produced in Miami, the series centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood spatter analyst.

Or you can just watch some classics like The Sopranos, which will keep you busy for a long time at 6 seasons.

TV shows are good if you're looking to get invested in something.

    One's I've gotten into:

    Sopranos
West Wing (yes, really.... its great)
    24
    Scrubs
    The Shield
    The Wire
    Lost (great...meh...good...interesting)
    Firely (mentioned)
    Band of Brothers (mentioned)
    heroes
The office (british... but I hear the US version stopped sucking once it got a sense of itself)
    The 4400
    The X files

I'm sure there's more but those are all worth of some time.

I don't get the Firefly love. Some of my friends tried to get me to watch it and I fell asleep 10 minutes in to the first episode. Probably the worst TV show I have ever seen.

    Anyway, here are my suggestions:

The Shield (Seasons 1-5 on DVD; Season 6 on DVD later this month; Season 7 on TV starting in September)
Weeds (Seasons 1-3 on DVD; Season 4 currently showing)
Burn Notice (Season 1 on DVD; Season 2 currently showing)
The West Wing (All 7 seasons are on DVD)
    Deadliest Catch

Bought Firefly... thrice (once for me, once for my dad and another for my gf), I was the only person to scream out "holy f+@!# crap!!!!" in a crowded theatre when the Watchmen trailer game on, Venture Brothers are already on my watchlist and BoB has been watched and enjoyed thoroughly.

But thanks for the suggestions guys I'll be picking up a few of the shows mentioned today (Dexter, 4400, Scrubs, The Wire since the new season came out on DVD) but another thing I'm more inclined to shows that have already finished (I hate following up all the time) so if there's anything good that's been finished and done with a while (3rd Rock From The Sun/Carnivale/Chappelle's Show etc) throw those up too.

Eh, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica both suffer from extremely long and "oh god when does this shit end" episodes. If you can make it past that, it gets MUCH better. Even I hated the first episode, and I love the series.

    Also for recommendations:
    -Arrested Development
-The Office (US) since the British one was mentioned
    -Dr. Who
-The Tick live action...because the world needs more Putty (Patrick Warburton)!

And now that that is out of the way:

    TV:
Firefly!, Veronica Mars, Eureka, Scrubs, Arrested Development, Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, Flight of the Conchords, Venture Brothers, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Futurama

    Movies:
Serenity!, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Fight Club, Sin City, The Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Sunset Boulevard, Dr. Strangelove OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Children of Men, Casino Royale, War Games, Shaun of the Dead, Time Bandits, Rush Hour, Blazing Saddles, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!, Lord of War, Tron, The Hunt for Red October, Men in Black, Willow, Sleeper, Ratatouille, The Usual Suspects, The Third Man, American Graffiti, Harold and Maude, Young Frankenstein, Annie Hall, Hot Fuzz, Casablanca, The Graduate, Solaris (the Tarkovsky version), Beverly Hills Cop, 12 Monkeys, A Boy And His Dog, Superbad, A Clockwork Orange, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Iron Man, The Departed, Rear Window, This is Spinal Tap, Best of Show

    Comics:
    Watchmen
    Transmetropolitan

And I know you said you don't read books because you're too busy but that's stupid. If you have time to watch a TV show you have time to read a book. ONE season is ~15 hours which is more than enough time to read a book. And frankly, most good books are better than almost any season of a TV show, no matter how good. Except Firefly which is better than everything. Soooo... Books!

Catch-22, Moby Dick, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Snow Crash, All The King's Men, Invisible Man, The Devil's Dictionary, Neuromancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, The Mote in God's Eye, The Sun Also Rises, Julius Caesar, Sometimes a Great Notion, Atlas Shrugged, Variable Star, Closing Time, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 1984, The Name of the Wind, Absurdistan, A Confederacy of Dunces, Going Postal, Night Watch, The Fountainhead, The Elements of Style, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Brave New World, Good Omens, The Great Shark Hunt, The Yiddish Policeman's Union, The Hero With A Thousand Faces, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Puppet Masters, Starship Troopers, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Spook Country, Treasure Island, Consider Phlebas, The Diamond Age, Love in the Time of Cholera, Pattern Recognition, American Gods, Anansi Boys, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, I Am America (And So Can You!), Gun with Occasional Music, Motherless Brooklyn, The Fortress of Solitude, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Here's a list of TV shows that I quite enjoy in rough order of my personal preference

    Firefly
    Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    Angel
    Farscape
    Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
    24
    Gilmore Girls
    Smallville
    Battlestar Galactica
    Prison Break
    Lost
    Veronica Mars

A few of these might have jumped the shark sooner or later but all of them are worth a shot.

    Hey, has anyone mentioned Firefly?

Also, in that vein, check out dr. horrible. It's out in Hulu, has Nathan Fillion, and it's done by the same guy that did Firefly. It's awesome.

Pretty much everyone has some great tv recommendations. I'll throw in The Middleman if you can catch it when it airs.

    Books/Comics;
Guardians of the Galaxy/Anhilation series- Space opera from Marvel. It actually doesn't require very much knowledge of marvel history

Deathstalker series of books- By Simon R. Green. If you like Star Wars, you'll probably dig this books, they're in the same space opera vein, except the books have a lot more drugs, sex, and violence.

I'm pretty sure there's some BSG comics out/coming out. Firefly has two series that just finished, with a third one on the way(this one revealing Book's past)

I know you didn't ask for it, but Song of Ice and Fire books are awesome, as are Name of the Wind. Both are fantasy book, but trust me, they're great.

Well as far as books go, I recommend the Harry Potter books. You will probably just fly through those books and the time at work will pass so fast.

    TV Shows:

    Scrubs
    The Office
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (So offensive, yet funny)
    Malcom In The Middle
    Aqua Teen Hunger Force
    Friends (My personal favorite)
Sopranos (Good to get away from sitcoms and this is perfect)
    Lost
    Heroes
    Arrested Development
Desperate Housewives (I love this show and someone else said Gilmore Girls =P)
Simpsons (They have like, what, 40 seasons? Should keep you busy for a while)
    King of the Hill
    Futurama

I know some that I said were already mentioned, but hopefully with the more "votes" the more likely you are to watch them. If I had to give you one show to watch though, I'd say Sopranos. It should be top priority.

Most of these probably don't have anything in common with Star Wars, but i love star wars, so maybe you'll like these things:

TV: How I Met Your Mother, The Office, Carnivale (I dont watch much tv)

Comics: Y: The Last Man, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Marvel 1602, Marvel's The Dark Tower/Gunslinger, Hellblazer (especially any of Ennis' runs), Preacher, Punisher Max, Runaways, Star Wars - Dark Empire/Mara Jade:By the Emperors Hand/Crimson Empire/Zahn Trilogy, The Boys, The Walking Dead, v2 or 3(current) of Wolverine

I know you said you're not a big reader, but there are some excellent star wars books out there. The Thrawn Trilogy is especially good (by Timothy Zahn). You can find a few comic book adaptations of the novels, so that might be the way to go for you.

Also keep reading, the book I Am Legend is way better than the movie :)

I'll second Dexter and Burn Notice. Season 3 for Dexter should be starting at the end of September, Burn Notice is currently into season 2.

Nobody has mentioned Rome yet, so I'll throw that out there. I thought it was a fantastic show, though the pacing on the 2nd season was definitely rushed because the writers found out they were only getting two seasons instead of three. It's the second historical drama with fantastic production values that HBO has killed before the creators could finish telling the story they set out to tell. Carnivale was the other one; that show was also good, but fair warning, it ends with a cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

Dexter is a great show. It's also a Showtime show, so each season is only 12 episodes. That said, it has wonderful production values and is masterfully filmed.

Carnivale is a good recommendation, even though it only got two seasons.

Can anyone explain why Dexter is appealing? I bought the first season on a whim and wasn't very impressed with the first few episodes. It seemed to a bit full of itself; like it was trying to be high-concept and edgy, but failed. Does it get better? Were the first several episodes just crap?
