Does anyone else feel like they are constantly out of the music loop?

I like to think that I listen to a lot of music and have a wide range of interests and favorites spread across a lot of genres. I listen to more than just public FM radio, including Pandora, XM and Last.fm

Yet anytime anyone engages me in music discourse, I have no fucking idea what they are talking about. I like grunge/alternative. But whoever I talk to will inevitably name a ton of bands I have never heard of, including the respective names of every single member/past members of said bands and there life stories and how it contributed to their music. They know why the album art was chosen. They know the band members favorite shoes.

How the fuck do you all keep up? I'm not looking to become some sage, knowing all and showing off, but I just feel like an idiot every time someone starts to talk about music. Who else feels the same?

Sounds like you are friends with a bunch of hipsters or tattoo artists.

I'm this way with movies but know very little about music comparatively.

I teach about 30 guitar students weekly, most of which regularly come in wanting to learn songs by artists I've never heard of.

I, however, am definitely out of the 'music loop' since I don't listen to any radio or watch muchmusic or shit like that.

A large amount of music is so shitty that it isn't really worth it being in the music loop. I do occasionally look through the top songs and albums at iTunes, but with songs by Miley Cyrus and Soldia' Boy near the top, I normally just ignore the current music trends and listen to what has already stood the test of time. I do occasionally delve for some new good songs.

I am not saying that all new music is bad, just a lot of it is.

I don't really think it's an "in" I think it's more along the lines of, you get someone talking about their favorite band and if they have done some research, they spout off a bunch of crap about them. I know a lot about some bands because I really enjoy their music.

Do what I do: automatically assume every band people talk about is horrible. I have gotten out of so many possible long-winded discussions about Arcade Fire this way.

rebellion (lies) is a good song

I am not saying to buy an album by every band that is recommended to you but to automatically shoot down anyone who talks about music sounds like a pretty good way to be a closed-minded prick for your entire life

Really, though, there's not that much to go up against.

If you lower the bar enough, right?
