Flying With An Expired ID

My friend is vacationing in Hawaii and his drivers license expired while he was over there. Is he going to be able to fly back? The drivers license is his only form of ID that he has with him.

As long as he doesn't drive anywhere he should be fine. It is still a legitimate form of identification that verifies his age, it just happens to be expired.

As far as I know, the TSA does not actually require an ID to let you get on a plane. If they notice that it's expired, they might hassle him about it, or treat him as a No-ID passenger, which means he'll be put through more stringent security checks and may be added to their security watch list. But since you don't need a driver's license to get on a plane, he should be able to get back.

He will be fine. Even if they ask him, he can tell them that it expired during his time in Hawaii and he is going to renew it when he gets back home.

Flying without an ID is a hassle, but not that bad. I did it for my first year of college. Basically they just automatically put you through the special extra security line, so make sure he gets to the airport alittle earlier to make up for it, and to just let them know right away.

Actually, once an ID expires, it's no longer considered a legitimate form of ID. Whether or not the person checking the ID cares about that is a whole new thing, though.

Trust me he can fly back. They will make him a selecty and put him in that line. If he gets a chance ask if he can try the puffer.

Yeah, I noticed my ID had expired when I was on my way home from christmas break this last year. They made me go through the puffer and they searched my bags. I felt bad for the lady who did it becasue it was mostly dirty laundry in there... but yeah, they'll let him on the plane eventually.

This won't help the guy from the OP, but it still belongs here. I recommend that everyone apply for passports. Now that you actually need them to get back in from places like Canada (and be aware that this fact might not be made obvious as you leave), they're just smart to have. They help avoid situations like this because they expire MUCH less frequently. They are a more trusted form of identification (standardized across states, federally tracked, not as easy to fake as many state IDs). All you need to apply is proof of birth and proof of citizenship. For most people this is a birth certificate and a social security card. The cost is minimal. Get one, and you won't have to worry about issues like this for quite some time.
