Johnny Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 - September 12, 2003)

Johnny Cash was born J. R. Cash in Kingsland, Arkansas to Ray and Carrie (Rivers) Cash, and raised in Dyess, Arkansas. Cash was reportedly given the name "J.R." because his parents could not agree on a name, only on initials. Cash was very close to his brother Jack, who was two years older. In 1944, Jack was pulled into a whirling table saw in the mill where he worked, and cut almost in two. He suffered for over a week before he died.

Considered the patriarch of country music, Johnny Cash started out as a rockabilly (a blend of bluegrass, rock and country music popular in the 1950s) singer. He became better acquainted with success in the following decades; he made millions, won a number of Grammys, and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. But his greatest feat was achieved in the 1990s, when his sound and character were discovered by a new generation, thanks to Rick Rubin and the release of American Recordings .

Like most of his catalog, songs like "Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "A Boy Named Sue" all told a story. Throughout his career, which spanned six decades, Cash became an icon for rebellion, individualism, patriotism, and spiritual modesty. His dark mystique was underscored by the fact that he always wore black (ever since his 1957 Grand Ole Opry show), which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black."

I grew up with Johnny, thanks to a father who grew up with him as well. On Semptember 13, the day I learned of his death, I wept with the same intensity and longing as if a cherished family member had died. An entertainer, a father, and a husband with immeasurable talent, Johnny Cash touched millions of lives with his words and with his legacy.

His music is the stuff of envy, bending genre and generation to touch the hearts of music fans everywhere

I <3 me some Johnny Cash something fierce; but I just wanted to point out that all 3 of the songs in the videos in the OP were covers done by Cash of other peoples songs (Trent Reznor, Shel Silverstein, Sting)

They're all amazing covers; as Cash did often late in his life, but throw a few of his own songs in there!

    I'm waiting for my man
    Twenty-six dollars in my hand
    Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
    I'm waiting for my man
Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind
I'm just lookin' for a dear, dear friend of mine
    I'm waiting for my man
Here he comes, he's all dressed in black
Beat up shoes and a big straw hat
He's never early, he's always late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait I'm waiting for my man
Up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody's pinned you, but nobody cares
He's got the works, gives you sweet taste
Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste
    I'm waiting for my man
Baby don't you holler, darlin' don't you bawl and shout
I'm feeling good, you know I'm gonna work it on out
I'm feeling good, I'm feeling oh so fine
Until tomorrow, but that's just some other time
    I'm waiting for my man

johnny cash's recent popularity ain't something i'm really big on

not that it isn't great stuff, but rather the people popping out of nowhere saying they love it or that "CASH WAS THE ORIGINAL PUNK"

same thing with miami rappers and mtv cribs bringing scarface to where it is now

every dime that they made on "Scarface: The World is Yours" should've went to Trick Daddy and Scarface (the rapper)

Fuck yes. "Understand Your Man"...possibly the best song about men and women ever written.
 Don’t call my name out your
    Window when I’m leavin';
I won’t even turn my head.
    Don’t send your kinfolks
    To give me no talkin';
I’ll be gone, like I said.

You’d say the same old thing
That you been sayin' all along.
Lay there in your bed and
keep your mouth shut, till I’m gone.
Don’t give me that old familiar cryin', cussin' moan...

    Understand your man
(I'm tired of you bad mouthin'.)
    Understand your man

You can give my other suit
    To the Salvation Army,
And everything else I leave behind --
I ain’t takin' nothin' that’ll slow down my travelin’
    While I'm untangelin' my mind.

I ain't gonna repeat what I said anymore,
While I'm breathin' air that ain't been breathed before.
I'll be as gone as a wild goose in winter
    Then you'll understand your man.

    Meditate on it!
    Understand your man.
    You hear me talkin', honey?
    Understand your man.
You remember what i told you.
    ....
