Hypnosis to Stop Smoking

I want to quit smoking.

I have been smoking now for the last 5 years (since I was 19) and I'm sick of it. Sick to death (no pun intended). I've tried Chantix and the stuff was gold and kept me away for almost 2 months, but it messed my sleep cycle up and with my busy lifestyle I need all that I can get.

Another problem is that my wife smokes, so the temptation is always there. Now I was thinking of Hypnosis. I know that if I can relieve myself of temptation then I can put this horrible habit behind me. Has anyone done this before? Does it work? Is it expensive? How bad is the withdrawl (I become a dick when I'm nic-ing)? Thanks in advance!

Can't help with the hypnosis thing, but it generally takes about 2 weeks for the nicotine to leave your system, so the irritability should ease up by then.

I lose the irritability in about 2 days, then it becomes a battle with my mind and I succumb to temtation.

Don't know about hypnosis, but I quit smoking January 2nd, after a good 11 years of more than a pack a day. Used the Nicoderm patch and it worked great.

One problem in your case is your wife smoking. Trust me - the temptation is already always there, you don't need anyone around to make you wish you had a cigarette. Any chance you can get her to quit with you?

Yeah, that is going to make it much harder. I would definitely talk to her about it. Quitting with someone makes it a little easier, at least it did for me, because if I were to give up, I would have felt like I was letting that person down.

I've tried but she is not ready. We've set dates to quit, etc and we wind up falling back into it. I think she has an emotional attachment to it. She has been smoking for almost 10 years and from my standpoint looks at cigarettes like a security blanket. I'm not sure if she is ready to make that commitment.

In the past though she has excised considerable willpower. When she found out she was pregnant with our latest she quit for 9 months. After kid was born and she was out of the hospital; right back to smoking.

No, can't say that I've tried it, but I am willing to give it a try.

Edit: Horray! Post Number 1,000 for me!

    Yeah, please do.

Here's the link to it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-Smokers/dp/1402718616

384 out of 435 people gave it a 5 star rating so it must have helped them. Maybe it will help you too :)

    Good luck buddy!

This. Work this angle. Not just for your own benefit, but for your kid. Lets assume she's not smoking in the house, thus removing the primary smoking hazard to your kid. There are tons of studies that have been done on different things related for smoking. No, I am not going to start pulling out references, this is not D&D. I haven't seen this one firsthand but I was just told about one recently primarily directed at grandparents with young grandkids. Someone claims to have proven a correlation between smokers who have the smoke in their clothes and infant issues (such as grandparents holding babies/toddlers against them, who then absorb nicotene products through the layers of clothes close to the mouth. I'm not trying to get into a smoking argument here, but just because your wife doesn't smoke in the house doesn't mean there isn't the potential for damage to the kids.

I mean I feel bad pressuring you to pressure your wife. But you are going to have a very hard time resisting urges with your wife right there smoking. Needless to say I would completely avoid alcohol while you do this.

Edit: a quick google yielded this as a start for people wanting more info on that particular study. I don't know if this is the one I was told about. http://no-smoking.org/aug06/08-08-06-3.html. Yes I know not an unbiased site, but USA Today is where the article's from, and you can also look up the prof at his university for more information.

My stepfather tried the hypnosis thing. The guy running the seminar guaranteed 100% success or future sessions were free. In less than a week, my stepfather was craving cigarettes again. The hypnosis guy was still in the area and gave my stepfather another free session. My stepfather never had another cigarette again. This must have been 15 years ago or so.
