This will be the first PAX I attend. I've been to a couple of differen all day events at large convention centers before though. What I want to know is how is the food in the convention center?
Normally food at these locations are crap and overpriced. So I'm wondering if a more experienced PAX er can let us all know decent places to eat for Lunch and Dinner. I guess I can snack inside the center, but real meals need to be decent. So, "Where's the Beef?"
I definetly thought the topic was "Pie Eating: Where to do it?"
This is a pretty good question. My Uncle's been to Seattle a few time so he told me a few good places to eat but none of them are close to the convention center.

The stuff at the convention center is pretty standard grab and eat stuff. A couple of coffee shops with pastries, Subway, a pizza place, and Tacos del Mar. The prices weren't horribly inflated. There's a place that makes great crepes right outside the front door though.
The guide ET linked has suggestions for a ton of good places. There are a ton of places scattered in the area, and there are two malls and Pike Place Market within walking distance.
I'm pretty sure I saw a cheesecake factory across the street last year. So there's one
Eh, I ate there last year and the food was... well, I'll say that I'm not going to eat there again.
Was it better than the food at the Flying J's in Butte?

If you don't want to get food from any of the in-convention center vendors or the restaurant on the first floor, I suggest walking over to the westlake center food court. It's only a couple minute walk and you'll have a bunch of choices (which is nice if you've got a group of people who can't agree on what to get for lunch)
Honestly, Cheesecake Factory has some of the best chain restaurant food around. It's spendy, but it's damn good. At least the few that I've been to have been.
I probably won't be eating there unless there's some other compelling reason to do so, just because the food is the same at all of them and I've eaten there several times. I'd prefer to hit the smaller, locally owned places. But Cheesecake Factory is good.

The crepe stand on the outside wall of the convention center was delicious. I highly recommend it. Everything from banana/nutella crepes to chicken/cheese/etc. crepes. And there is a Cheesecake Factory across the street, which was alright. I only got the fried macaroni there.
I'd suggest walking toward Pike Market. They have tons of food at the market, including World Famous Macaroni and Cheese (and I kid you not, it is absolutely delicious), fresh baked bread, and a lot of other food. There's a Starbucks, and some thing that sold these weird but delicious pastries - and it's all reasonably priced.

Certainly, the recommendations of like-minded people are useful, but even just on this page people are divided over whether Cheesecake Factory is any good, so a single recommendation may lead to a good place, but it also might not.
What the Pho? is pretty good, but the only one I know of is in downtown Bellevue, a couple blocks away from old PAXtown. Not exactly walking distance. :P
Penny Arcade's absolutely favorite place to eat there is this tiny place called Juice It down on the first floor. It's SO easy to miss though - it's in some tiny back corner, but go check it out. THey have all of these different types of rice bowls... they're all amazing.

I just want to say, for the record, that if you're in Seattle and drinking Starbucks coffee, you are doing it wrong.
In all seriousness, there are a number of superior options, the one nearest PAX being a Caffe Ladro about a block south of the WSCTC. I haven't been to that outlet specifically, but there's one across the street from my workplace -- similar in price and speed to Starbucks, but much higher quality.
Edit: It's a block north, I'm still not square on my directions here.
There's also Cyber-Dogs, which is right under the trade centre. It usually goes unnoticed, but it's across the centre's parking exit right before the bridge over 1-5. If you're looking for it, you'll notice its neon.
They're open 10 a.m. 'til midnight. They've got espresso, of course, some alcohol, and breakfast and lunch bites like english muffins, baked potatoes and salads.
Mainly, however, they specialize in vegetarian hot dogs, and while I'm of the omnivorous sort, I recommend you try it out. If you're going to go veggie or vegan, Seattle's the best city to trust. Experiment, people!
One thing I liked was the super nachos the convention was selling last year in the expo hall. Might be a little expensive but worth it. Cheaper then Denny's. Of course though, 90% of the time I went to Subway and one time I went to Cyber Dogs, they were alright. I should get out of the convention area more though. I always stay in the convention area from opening to closing. I just can't pull myself away even for a good meal.
I just want to say, for the record, that if you're in Seattle and drinking Starbucks coffee, you are doing it wrong.
This also goes for Seattle's Best. ... I'll admit, I sent a couple of people there last year when they told me Starbucks was too cliche and nasty, and they loved it way more (I did it for the lolz, and did not fail). For those not in the know, Seattle's Best is owned and operated by Starbucks.
Go find something delicious. If you really, REALLY want Starbucks, go to store #1 down in Pike Place Market. They take a little more pride in the coffee there and it does taste marginally better/less burned.

Completely true. Only been Seattle twice--three times come next week--and they are correct. There is also this place along the way down to Pike Place...I can't remember the name but it was across the street and after the Music Theater Center that had good coffee as well.

Agreed.
I'm not a Starbucks person, but sometimes people like a familiar place of reference.
OK sooo....i work for sakura con half the time, and this issue came up when our staff (and attendees) wanted to get some food, and more of a variety then the convention center...i have this list i have compiled over the last year, it's no where near completion, and some disclaimers were added for SC as they May have different rules then you peeps? either way, if something is way off, let me know and i shall fix it!
Rogue's & peeps recommended places to dine!
Ok so I have been reading the forums and I see a few people talk about the eatery places closing around nine and the needing of a guide. So I'll tell you all what I know, this is to be passed on to the programming guide and to be printed and passed out if you staffers wish it. Razz
first off, to start the following places are INSIDE THE CONVENTION CENTER: star bucks, 2 subways, a pizzeria, and a taco del mar. also they serve pizza inside on carts ($5 for a personal) and drinks and chips.
There is a mini mart that's right next to the entrance of the convention center. They have a lot of quickie food and a good assortment of energy drinks/healthy drinks too. He's open till like 11pm or so. Rumor is he extends his hours if there is a good flow of customers coming in.
There is a McDonald's outside the convention center, about 2-3 blocks going left starting at game works. Decent food for when your in a tight pinch. Open till 10/11 pm I think. Also another one on the corner one block south of west lake mall, by the metro bus tunnel/Macy's.
Also two places I notice most new people miss. If you willing to pay 8 to 11 a plate. There's the cheesecake factory, really good Italian food, and of course awesome selection of cheesecake. (Note: cheesecake factory is RIGHT next to the convention center, cannot miss it!)
Also, there's a grill right inside game works, and their about 7-12 a plate, but their food is good, and their open till nearly 12 on the weekends (Friday included) and they have a nice bar to boot. (The bar is split off from the gaming floor/restaurant)
For those willing to travel a bit, there is a Dick's eatery near the Seattle center/P.S.C./space needle. The most cheap and BEST (IMO, don't quote me) to get burgers/fries/milkshakes Smile open till 2 AM, and way cheap! Their located 1-2 blocks from the space needle the/key arena
For those 21 and over there's this quaint little bar called 5 point that's across from the fisher plaza/ near the pacific science center. Their food is HUGE and they have a good selection of drinks and brews (in most cases) ((try the country fried steak, very yummy!))
Another common mistake I am seeing is that some people are forgetting there's a monorail at west lake mall, 2 blocks over that takes you to a BUNCH of eatery places, Seattle center!, though....they close around 10/11pm thou. So use it if you want lots of choices,
same with west lake mall (where the monorail begins) there's some good choices there too, including bubble tea! But the west lake area closes at 9/10 on weekends, so be careful Razz ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION , NEW THIS YEAR TO THE WESTLAKE MALL, P.F CHANGS AND A SUSHI TYPE PLACE RIGHT NEXT TO BOBCHINE xD (I must be slacking, cannot believe i forgot those! :O )
Lets see...there's a couple good pubs in pike place market, don't know what they really serve, but the one inside pike place market has a really good rating.
Also right across the street from the front of pike place market lies a johnny rockets, pretty good, just not cheap like dick's, but a better assortment of milkshakes.
There's an ivers on the waterfront (right near the ferry docks, forgot which pier number) their open I think till 10/11pm their prices are a bit crazy (since it be seafood) but it's a dine in and the red chowder is to die for Smile
There's also a red robins on the water front, right next to the victora clipper tours boat launch (on the pier, just like ivers), pretty good, but crowded at times. Prices are about $10 a plate
For those who want really good pizza (and unique!) try zeeks, right across from fisher place and near Seattle center. Their pizza is just awesome, and the prices are not too bad, they even have brews too. But it's considered an all ages eatery.
Also in the mall (pacific place, one block down from game works) that's almost right next to west lake lies a movie theater and 5 eatery's up top, they close at 9/10 pm. A fair warning though, all the places are awesome, but the prices are a tad high, so these places might be used for a good first date/hang out with friends? the following are inside: Johnny rockets/ todais (Really expensive, but all you can eat!!!) / some kind of Greek place/ a Mexican restaurant/ and a pub that servers American type food.
Rumor (needs to be confirmed) taco time 4-6 blocks north of the convention center, warning, may be a bit of a walk
GROCERY STORE: 4 blocks east on Madison and 8th (?) full assortment of food for those who choose to go green or non greesey
Subway south 3-4 blocks then take a left
And if you want quizno's....from where this subway is, I THINK go down another block and it's right next to a smoke shop.
Also there is a terreiaki shop (cheap!) almost right across from johnney rockets, just go south of the convention center about 3 blocks or so.
Lets see...there's a Fox Grill sports pub now open, just to south one block and take a right, past the nike store, I heard their good, their prices for drinks are a bit shady thou, so I hear.
Also, this was a vague suggestion, but if you just go north of the convention center, you'll find a slew of restaurant's there (to who posted this, if I could at least get some street names on this?)
Also for those who would like a small drink or two, there is a Washington state liquor shop on 3rd & Madison (not food, but for buddies who just wish to celebrate a little) (note: if I catch you holding room parties or getting too drunk in public, I'll get my boxing kangaroo to beat you one Razz also minor consumption is bad!)
Also another mini-mart two blocks south of macys, decent selection, but prices be a tad high for soda and such
Dragon fish cafe/restaurant : it's the place inside the paramount hotel, decent hours and rumored to be good for it's price. also a happy hour and group discounts?
Shiro's (type : jap?) on the corner of 2nd & battery. Said to be a good place. Need a better review if possible
Shaito's japanese bar (type: jap) on 2nd and lennora. No data exists for this place, if someone knows of this place, please submit a review. (Warning: if assumption serves correct, this may be a bar too)
Uwajimaya' (type: all types of japanese food, including a bakery, also there's a grocery store inside filled with the works of anything asain oriented) this place WILL be a hot spot folks, I can promise you that. They have a food bowl place, a bubble tea with MANY selections, a thai place, even this wierd burger place they just put in X_x will get address soon :O
Oasis (type: japanese) a place right across from uwajimayas, then have pool, some card tables, and a few tv's. Good place for people under 21
sushiland: near the seattle space needle, an all you can eat sushi bar (cheaper then todai's, if rumors are servering correct) I need the addy guys! xD
There is a cute sushi bar (Sushi Kudasai) inside the Century Square building on 4th between Pike and Pine. And a FANTASTIC one (my personal favorite) called Umi Sake House in Belltown on 1st and Blanchard. (It's a bit of a hike but well worth it, and buses are free downtown)
Century Square also hosts a Starbucks, a really cute panini shop, a taco bar, a chinese place and an italian place.
The Rock Bottom Brewery at 5th & University is awesome. Typical brewery food.
Gordon Biersch Brewery in Pacific Place is pretty cool. Typical brewery food.
There's a small hot dog stand (I think it's called Dog in the Park) across from Westlake Center, next to Sephora that is FANTASTIC. Average $4 for a kielbasa or bratwurst, $2 for standard all-beef frank. Smile
The Crumpet Shop at Pike Place Market makes for an awesome cheap, quick and easy breakfast that's not fast-food.
There's a small chinese place in the bottom level of Pike Place Market (near the comic shop!) that has awesome, cheap hombow.
Von's at the bottom of the Roosevelt is absolutely THE BEST EVER. Kinda pricey but completely worth it for the level of service and quality of the food you get. Smile
The Noc-Noc is a bar on 2nd and Pike that has a good happy hour. Cheap food and drink, decent quality.
EDIT: ok added some new places AGAIN . Also...added a new disclaimer due about the mini mart and such
Lets see....this is all I can remember for now, I will add more when I get some sleep. (Including street names and such, also in case someone questions this, I live in rainier beach and work in downtown, so I try all the place I can just for kicks Smile )
Also this has to be added just to be safe
Disclaimer: in no way with the suggestion of the bars and the Washington liquor store do I condone the following: public drunkenness, random "sleep overs", Underage Drinking, or room parties, kapeesh?
2nd disclaimer/notice: last I checked, due to them wanting their food om premises, no outside food or drink is allowed in the core of the convention center (near double doors on the final floor, by the starbucks is the limit line) so your gonna have to eat your food inside your room or before you get back, so in no way did I promote the the tactic of trying to sneak your food in.

Well, that's gas station food. It's bad by default.
If I was in such an awful predicament, I'd side with the more variety of poor food at CF.
I probably won't be eating there unless there's some other compelling reason to do so, just because the food is the same at all of them and I've eaten there several times. I'd prefer to hit the smaller, locally owned places. But Cheesecake Factory is good.
