Network setup help/ router reccomendations

So this is the situation that I have:

There are 2 computers (PC desktops) that we'd like to have on the same net connection.
One would be on the 2nd floor of the house, the other in the basement.

A Linksys wireless-N WRT160N router has been purchased, but reading reviews I'm not sure how well it'd work. Any recommendations of anything that would be better before I open the box? Will the store (Staples I think) take it back if we try it out and it sucks?

Would the placement of a wireless router have to be on the first floor to reach both computers? I'm only really concerned about connection reliability for the 2nd floor computer (MMO playing), the basement one will mostly just be email/internet.

Any help appreciated, don't know anything about network setup. :)

    1. Don't know anything about that particular router, but if you don't like it then you should be able to return it. Just say it didn't do what you expected it to do.

    2. Hook up the router to the second floor modem. You can have a reliable wired connection for your MMO needs and the signal should reach for your email and internet needs on the other PC.

    3. Read the book your router came with, it will help you greatly.
