I was looking for PC Cooperative RPGs that are not MMOs, that failed. So not wanting to let a good thread go to waste, the thread will now change its orientation to serve our co-op needs across all genres, I'll be updating the OP when I can to make it a comprehensive list of games. Till then, let us all discuss the awesome that is co-operative gaming.
I'd like to keep a list of co-op games so it'll make for easy reference in the future. Details such as number of players, whether they are skirmishes or campaigns and whether a single copy of the game with one CD-KEY can be used over a LAN gaming session will be added as more information comes.
Games that are linked have a current [GAME ON] going on in the forums right NOW.
The list below is still preliminary, for now, have fun.

Original Intention of the Thread
I was looking for games like Morrowind/Oblivion that has co-op, but not MMOs. Games like Elona with co-op would also be appreciated very much. I also mentioned not liking Icewind Dale II and Diablo II. So if anyone has a slight idea of what I would like, feel free to contribute. Thanks.

Of course, I usually compare it more to Diablo 2, so you may still not like it. I think it's worth a trial if you can get a trial disc, though.
The good thing about it is that you can always respec if you want to. You can't change classes after you've made your character, but you can change point distribution and skills at almost any time.

hm. an online rpg that isn't an mmo... a hack n slash that isn't a hack n slash... co-op roguelike...
...
...... urban dead?
I caught wind of a Morrowind Co-op mod, but apparently it wasn't much. You could see your partner, but that's where it ends. His/her actions didn't affect the world, you could only see your friend.
Sorry, the only co-op games I can think of right now are action games. Heck, co-op RPG's in general are pretty rare, most people and companies tend to view them as solitary gameplay experiences (with the exception of MMO's ). There's Dungeon Siege II. Co-op and action oriented RPG, bit like Diablo but more streamlined. You can try the demo and see if it's your kind of thing. There's also Titan Quest, but again this is a Diablo clone (probably a lot closer to Diablo than Dungeon Siege).
I can't think of any good, story based RPG's except the Baldur's Gate series. If you disliked IWD because of its mainly combat bent then you might enjoy Baldur's Gate a lot more.
Actually, System Shock 2 had co-op. Limited resources and a claustrophobic setting make it imperative that you work together. Pretty solid RPG mechanics too, it might just be what you're after.
Now aside from RPG's, there are a few more games I can recommend:
- SWAT 4: Awesome team based co-op, missions are hard and it's important to work together as a team
- Serious Sam: Opposite end of the shooter spectrum, it's all about blasting stuff in obscene numbers and having fun doing it
- Gears of War: Was pretty much designed with co-op in mind. Definitely an action game, but on the hardest difficulty you'll want to work together in order to survive.
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance: Never played this, but although it's more action oriented it's got RPG mechanics as well. I've heard it's quite good.
If you don't mind not having actual missions, but instead playing skirmish, then RTS's Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander and Sins of a Solar Empire are pretty awesome when played co-operatively against the machine (called a "comp stomp", although despite the name they can still be really hard ).
On the horizon there's Dawn of War II, which is going to have co-op as a campaign. I'm pretty certain there's one or two other games I was thinking of but they've slipped my mind. Anyway, hope this gives you some ideas.
On that note, is SWAT 4 co-op off the bat or will I need mods/expansion packs.
You can play SWAT 4 without the expansion packs just fine (although they're not difficult to get if you just buy the "Gold" edition, which ought to be cheap by now). The Expansion adds in new missions, a few new weapons that I would call useful but not essential, and new "hold / go" commands for stacking some orders until you're ready to initiate.
It's a very tough tactical shooter I'll tell you that now, but that makes it all the more important to work together. There's no rebounding health, going Rambo will get you, and possibly the rest of your squad, killed. It's easy to be dropped in literally one shot.
The thing to bear in mind about SWAT 4 is that it's not a traditional run and gun FPS. It's a tactical FPS. But more importantly, instead of focussing on soldiers, it's a game that's based around policemen. As such your objective is as a life saving organisation. Where you can, you take people into custody, even the bad guys. You can't just shoot people dead, everyone has to be given their chance for compliance. You can't shoot a bad guy just because he's running away from you. The times that you are allowed to fire is in defence of life, meaning that there is a direct threat to either you, your squad, or a civilian. You're also sometimes given snipers on a level, they're weapons free and are allowed to take out suspects where you deem necessary irrespective of whether they're directly a threat to someone right now.
This whole mentality makes the game very tense, because you're never really certain exactly what a suspect is going to do. Trying to rush things will tend to get you killed, you need to be methodical in your approach, control the flow of suspects through the level by covering hallways and using door wedges, make good use of tactical aids to get the drop on people and stuff like that. The gameplay could best be described as periods of cautious movement and planning, followed by short bursts of frenetic action as you breach doors and clear rooms.
As you can probably tell I was a big fan of the game.
I know it's a little too much to be asking for awesome graphics, but I guess something that does not scream 'ugly' would be nice.
I just remembered the other unreleased game I was thinking of.
It's basically going to be a four player co-op shooter set in a world that's had a sudden case of the zombies. The main point of interest for this game is the AI director, which dynamically alters the pitch and flow of the game, creating pacing and ramping up the difficulty depending on how well you're doing.
As the four survivors it's your objective to get to the safe room at the end of each map, and eventually finish the campaign alive. Aside from the zombie hordes that can stream out from everywhere, you'll also need to face the "Boss Infected", which are unique zombies with special capabilities. Depending on the game mode, these characters are also human controlled, and their sole objective is to eliminate (or at least help eliminate) the survivors before they can reach safety.
It's looks to be shaping up to be a cool game and Valve have set the release date as this November.
Or maybe I should, I don't know. >.<
There are some screenshots on Steam, but I certainly think it looks alright. The level design in particular is very atmospheric, so that certainly helps.
TITAN QUEST! And it's expansion!
A Diablo clone, yes, but a Diablo clone with beautiful graphics, decent story, and 4-player co-op throughout the entire thing.
There's your RPG with co-op.
I think he means comp stomp.
Dungeon Siege 1 and 2
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
Two Worlds (heh)
I played DS 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne with my wife. Lots of hack and slash fun. Neverwinter Nights has much more depth then the others, but we pretty much played it hack and slash style because that's what my wife likes. Titan quest and Dungeon Siege games only need one license to play but two CD's, Neverwinter needs unique license to play co-op. Don't know about Two Worlds.
Anyway, for the ones who haven't noticed, I'm updating the OP.
I always thought it still looked good. Sure it's a bit dated but the graphics still convey a good sense of atmosphere. Good fun with friends.
Can you run the Steam version in jDoom? Some people prefer that (I tend to prefer the games in the original engine, but I can understand how an enhanced engine might be preferable).
I have no idea, I've never used jDoom (I always try and use the original engine as well) but I supposed you could try it.
jDoom is only for Doom engine games, so Hexen 2 (a Quake engine game) wouldn't work.
But while we're on the subject, any of the Doom games, or Heretic and Hexen 1, would be good for co-op I'm sure.

If you don't like Diablo II, then I'm afraid there's very little out there in terms of action/RPG gameplay that is available. Neverwinter Nights is my personal love, but you really really have to play custom user-created modules and have at least a passing interest in DnD 3rd edition.
Didn't most of the Vampire: the Masquerade games have Co-Op gameplay?
Also, you let a thread go for ONE day, and you already deemed it a failure... what the heck? Some of the folks around here don't even read the boards every day. I remember your original post stating the kind of things that you enjoy and would like to see, but I don't see it in your edit. Perhaps you can re-instate this so that folks can find an answer to your OP. You really have to wait for a thread to reach at least 5 pages or more before you can get some good answers.
I have high hopes for this thread. Just yesterday I was searching for threads on this exact subject and was disappointed to find a bunch of one or 2 page threads, all of which listed the same old games. It's not that there is much room for improvement on the game count but perhaps we could list some mods for the aforementioned games to make that all the greater.
