The $299 price isn't confirmed yet, and no one else has noticed the total lack of dedicated F-keys yet? :P
Re: Atom performance, it's about equal to an ~800MHz Pentium M. If you want something with a little more to it, you'll have to wait for the dual-core Atom and see what it does for battery life.

Thats a rather low max memory, most atom subnotebooks seem to have a max of 1.5-2 gigs, other than that it looks good
I doubt most people who buy this will try to run any programs that would need more than 1GB of RAM. It's looking like a great low-end PC - my only concern is that 16GB is still so very tiny.

We could be hitting the Wall of Marketing here. MS isn't allowing XP to be sold on systems with more than 1GB of RAM - so it could just be that they're only marketing it as capable of taking 1GB to comply with those restrictions, but it'll take a 2GB SODIMM just fine.
Or it could just be shit.

I've been using 512MB for nearly five years now. It hurts sometimes, but I never bothered to upgrade it.

Please tell me you're still on DDR and can't find any upgrades, otherwise you're just being a masochist given that 2GB of DDR2 costs about $35-$40 these days.

DDR PC3200 SODIMM (Dell laptop)
So it's about $50 to add a 1GB stick. I guess I've meant to do it for so long, I've just reached a point where I feel investing in this machine is a bit silly.

I always assumed that the maximum memory indicated on a spec sheet meant that it was the most that the motherboard would support.
Spec sheets have been wrong before; but I'm just suggesting it as a possibility. And being hopeful. So very hopeful.

Ahh, old rig is old. Understandable, I've got a couple machines on 1GB at home.
Anything with less than 2GB just feels dirty to me though.

this is pretty much how the Asus EEE works, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I'd wager they're built as functions into the number keys.
That would make them "not dedicated" F-keys.
Two finger combos will be annoying enough (F1 => Fn-F1) - now imagine Alt-F4 becoming Alt-Fn-F4, and three-buttons as in Ctrl-Alt-Fn-F1 or something.
