I had the good fortune of seeing this film on a flight, I seriously doubt I would've come across it otherwise.
It's part ironic 80's nostalgia, part buddy comedy but mostly about the feeling of being a kid with your imagination offering everything you could possibly want out of life. It's honestly and intelligently written, even if it does follow an inevitably template-ish plot, the details of this movie, the little things really make it something special.
The basic premise is that there are 2 kids- one street smart touch troubled kid forced to fend for himself due to a neglectful mother who leaves him alone with his spoiled 16 year old brother, and a sheltered, socially awkward but extremely imaginative child whose single parent family happens to be part of a creepy Amish-like cult (The Plymouth Brethren)
The first kid bullies and cheats the second into helping him film Rambo after the 2 of them manage to get their hands on a pirated copy of First Blood. From there, the second kid starts rewriting the story with him as Rambo's son.
I don't think any other film has come close to making me remember this vividly what it was like to be a kid.
