PrePAX Bar Bash on Thursday (8/28/08)

I'm a bartender at a local geek/freak bar and we're hosting a little Pre-PAX bash the Thursday before PAX starts. (Yes this is a bar so you have to be 21+ to enter.) We've got DJs who are real life geeks during the day who will be spinning all sorts of game/retro/internet sort of stuff. We're doing discount door fees that night for PAX attendees, $3 instead of the normal $5 cover.

Additionally: Our bar is a non-profit private club run by volunteers. Our only entrance is down a side alley beneath the Auto Battery shop. Drinks are generally strong and reasonably priced. Please drink responsibly. This is a smoking bar. Nobody there is paid an hourly wage, so we REALLY appreciate tips. :)

We're running a pre-PAX bar crawl and since this is along the route I would ammend it to include your bar BUT the cover charge is going to be a sticking point since we're only planning to be at each bar for half an hour.

Man, who wants to drink with a cover? I could buy a drink with that money.

I went on a bar crawl with some local PAX/CCSTers on saturday. One bar wanted a cover, so we skipped it and moved on to the next one.

ditto. we've already got a pub crawl, enough with these additional parties. thursday night is pretty well stacked as is.

Don't forget the number of people we're talking here. It never hurts for people to have an alternative thing to go to.

The fact that smoking is allowed inside (unheard of in California!) and that there is a total underground feel (no sign, and only entrance is in an alley?! shit yes!) does sound pretty cool. Kudos, sir.

The PAXers will vote, quite directly, on what they want to do with their attendance. It's not our place to discourage someone from posting their event. Personally, I'm already committed to the bar crawl and will probably skip this. Even so, I definitely appreciate you putting this out there and would encourage anyone else to post their events too.

    Peace, K

huh? smoking's illegal in all non residential buildings in washington.

[edit]just re-read the first post. wtf? smoking is illegal in bars, how can this be that it's a "smoking bar?"

it's a 'club' where you have to be a 'member' to get in that also happens to serve drinks, so it's slightly outside the law in the fact that its not a public venue

i've read about how some bars try to get around the law because it's legal to smoke if it's for a performance at a club by having improv nights and saying everyone in the place is a part of a 'bar-improv' group or something like that. crazy loopholes.

    This is slightly correct.

The bar is a members only bar. IIRC, the Mercury (the name of the bar), will not take responsibility for your smoking. Thusly, if you're smoking and in their bar, you will receive a ticket.

The one thing I will say for the Mercury (outside of the music which is primarly goth/industrial/ebm), is that the bartenders pour heavy.

If you do end up going, make sure you get try a black orchid. That should sufficiently drunk you.

definitely, what you pay for in cover is made up for by the heavy pours of the bartender. it's been a long time since i've been there but in the past you couldnt get in unless a member brought you. so, merc is opening their doors to all paxers on thurs?

The Merc has open door nights. Thursday might be one of them. Friday and Saturday are members only, guest may arrive with members.

Smoking: This is completely legal in our bar, because we are A: non-profit B: Members Only and C: have no employees (we are all volunteers). Yes it is a loop hole, but it has never been a problem for us, and we have a great reputation with the SPD since we're one of the few bars on Capital Hill that never have to call them. Nobody will get a ticket for smoking there.

Membership: It is true that 99% of the time you can't get in without knowing someone. This is a special event where we're opening our home to non-members under the assumption that PAX goers are awesome and will behave accordingly (being an Enforcer since year one, I know this is true).

Cover: I got the cover reduced as much as I could. This is not an attempt to make money off you. We are a non-profit club, so the door fees are used to cover promotion costs and compensate our DJs for their time (and none of them really make anything off the door, they do it out of love).

Pub Crawl: I hadn't heard about this until after my event was being organized. I totally understand why you guys (and gals) wouldn't want to include it. This isn't really the kind of place that you just drop in and have a drink and move on. I'd love for you all to come in, maybe a few of you will check it out and convince the others to stop by next year.

Drinks: Yes, we are known to be a little heavy handed with our pours. Our drinks are also cheap compared to a "normal" bar. This is more of a warning than a selling point. I want everyone to enjoy themselves and still be able to make it to the opening on Friday. ;)

I have been to the Merc once.

It's the first time in my life that I don't remember getting home.

    Or puking in the alley...

or laying in the alley asking to be killed.

Their bartenders rock my world. :D

Glad to see there's at least some interest.

Just so everyone knows, we often stay open later than announced. If we're still busy at last call we may decide not to stop at 2:00 AM. So if you guys get bored at Shorty's you should certainly consider stopping by if it's not to late.
