Bands that have faded into dusty wikipedia servers...
Forgive me if this is placed in the wrong place and feel free to move if there be need.
So which bands in your opinion actually deserved better? I mean, relatively young bands, who could actually got back into the scene.
For example, does anyone remember the Bomfunk MC's from late 90s, early 2000s? Not sure if they ever scored anything in North America but they were a huge hit in Europe, with Freestyler in particular.
I was going through my music archieves and came across Freestyler. What a hit that was. Its not techno, not hiphop, dunno, alternative dance? Not really.
Also, were they ever popular in the U.S.?
i live in a country with a batshit crazy president and no, english is not my first language
Now, when I say Emo, I'm not talking the goth/wrist slashy crowd that seems to have taken over. Still Life was a bit more about just expressing some kind of emotion, any kind, through music. Apparently during some performances they were so shy they played facing away from the crowd.
Then things got all gothy and depressing and whiny.
I know all this cause I know one of the guys in the band. I worked with him at one of my testing jobs and he's an awesome guy, still a great friend.

Do you mean bands that got on the radar then faded away prematurely or bands that we wish were more popular?
Because if its the second one, this will just become an indy music pissing contest. If the question is about bands that got big, faded away too quickly, and could still come back:
-Semisonic
-A Perfect Circle
-The Postal Service

Ahh yeah the first one.
The Postal Service I really liked. Especially after what they did for Garden State. They may come back though, it hasn't been that long since they faded away.

New album due later this year (from Postal Service).
I always thought the Presidents of the United States of America, Harvey Danger, and Marcy Playground always deserved to be more than one or two hit wonders. They've all put out great material since their one song blasted them into the mainstream but they haven't been able to get another strong foothold like their iconic songs.
They were an awesome Irish Pub band with a mellow angry sound that was pleasing to the ears. Their renditions of Skibereen and Newry Highwayman were absolutely beautiful. Their sudden demise due to a series of unfortunate departures and a freak accident makes me want to murder someone.
It's a hell of a shame that the wheels fell off APC, they've produced some pretty decent stuff and with Maynard back full time with Tool and Howerdel working on ASHES dIVIDE it would appear that APC's staying down for the count.
Bomfunk deserves nothing but scorn and obscurity; They did one hit song and subsequently tried to make multiple covers of their own cash cow... Fuck 'em.
Edit: My Vitriol was a forgotten gem of Smashing Pumpkins-esque melodic rock.

I don't remember hearing that song offhand but it's definitely electronica which most people would classify as 'techno'. Don't want to get into a genre discussion but that's my view on it (maybe I shouldn't say definitely for everyone but just me). I find a lot of artists that get a song of a similar style popular don't get more than 1 or 2 popular ones. So did they deserve better? Hard to say but I rarely like more than a couple songs from an artist, few rare ones like NiN, Daft Punk I tend to like more of but that's rare.
To add my own onto this list...I can't think of any, most of my favorites weren't popular by most standards.
I would like to second marcys playground and harvey danger. Something new from The mighty mighty bosstones would make me happy (I know i know i'm lame).

For confusing goth with emo, you deserve every kind of hate I have to offer.
That said, the Sex Pistols, while being whored for cash ever since, should've gone on longer in a lot of people's eyes.
What happened to the Propellerheads? They did one album where every track was fantastic and then disappeared. Their version of On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the best Bond theme that never was and their tune 'Spybreak' was the backing track to the lobby scene in the Matrix.
I seem to remember the Sneaker Pimps having a few good songs and then nothing.
Also, it's a crime that Loud Lucy never had more then one hit.
they call those one hit wonders...
and some bands really can only get lucky once and then the rest is utter crap.
my favorite example: REM
man, what?
They probably have more radio songs then anyone but the Beatles.
edit: and Loud Lucy was awesome.
I think REM has just changed their style enough times that everytime they have a single out, they sound like a new one-hit wonder, or something. That's the only explanation I can come up with.
But shit, even if you only count the period during which they were hugely popular (late 80's/early 90's), you're talking about like three albums and a dozen singles.
well music is kind of subjective and i really dont like the majority of the music ive heard.
it goes kinda like this, hey this song i just heard sounds kinda cool let me go see what else they have. oh thats all crap.

yeah, Monster was their last great album. I made the mistake of buying New Adventures in HiFi and Up (I think the next two albums after Monster), and UGH. Terrible.

Re: Grandaddy - i never thought of them as "globally forgotten" per se; They had a track on the 28 Days Later OST and quite a lot of TV time for a sort-of-indie band iirc.

Was one of the first Emo bands.

See how many books I've read so far in 2010

I don't know I find that a lot of bands end up becoming shitty with time. Not so much that they've been forgotten.

Which is sad, because their one non-Christmas album (Beethoven's Last Night) was superlative.
Propellerheads - Bang On
I never finish anyth

I always liked Elgin Park, but haven't heard too much Grandaddy.
