So I've been looking around for a fedora, but I'm a little unsure if that's the style I've been thinking of.
Specifically, I've been looking for the hat that you would relate to newspaper reporters in the early to mid-20th century. They're called fedoras, right?
I think what you are looking for comes under the class of "stingy brim" They are fedoras with short brims rather than the broad brim like the hat Indy wears. Look at trilbys, homburgs and pork pies.
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
Because everyone is thinking it but noone is rude enough to say it: you will not look good in a fedora. you do not want a fedora
Edit: or a trilby hat
Don't listen to him, fedoras are awesome.
My two favorite ones come from http://www.countrygentleman.com/. http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/ has a good selection of various brands and styles you can look through, but your best bet is to go to a high end department store in the fall and winter, most seem to stock them seasonally with winter wear. Try on some and see what looks good.
Also, because I have an excuse to, here's me in my favorite fedora at Alcatraz.

i have to agree. JFK killed the hat, it hasn't looked good since. it simply makes you look out of place in a very bad way, not in a unique sense. just my $0.02. in any case, good luck finding the hat.
There are some few exceptions, but by and large, yeah, most folks will not look good in a fedora. Especially the dudes wearing one with jeans, a t-shirt and a trenchcoat. If its the right hat, put together with a good outfit, then it can work, but it requires a lot more thought than slapping on a baseball hat IMO.
If you are going to buy one, go to a real hat shop and try on different styles. Fedora's come in a variety of materials and brim widths.

this, pretty much. Fedoras get a lot of shit because people look bad in them, and it's always the person's fault. Whether they are the cliche neckbeardy fat-guy-in-a-fedora or they, for some unimaginable reason, think there is any time when it is appropriate to wear a fedora with jeans, it comes down to them. To wear a fedora and not just be entirely awful, you need to be the right build, the right height, well-dressed and have the right facial structure. It's a lot easier to just go with a nice beanie, honestly.

I see your point, but a lot of good fedoras cost over $100. I was more or less going to buy one off ebay, since I'm not too picky about quality. I will go to a hat shop and try some on before I buy, though.
And about the fashion sense thing, I'm not really going to wear it around town a lot. It's more of a personal thing.
i own an indiana jones fedora. (it is a movie replica hat i got at an online haberdashery)
I have worn it all over the world for years now. It is a conversation starter it keeps the sun and rain out of your eyes and it is very comfortable. You can not go wrong with a fedora. They rock. Don't let the nay sayers get you down. They are just jealous they can't pull it off.
Just because there has been a LONG slow decline of the american hat doesn't mean you cant bring it back. Top hats, fedoras, berets, whatever. If you are outside you should be wearing a hat. Its what any true gentleman would do.

normally seen on this guy.
Probably what you're looking for.
There are few different styles in regards to brim width and shape of the top, but the little picture on the right of the page is a typical fedora.
I've purchased a couple through these guys. Great selection and quality.
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
Is there any other way to wear it?
I kinda like "PUSH" ala the Three Stooges.
