Dealing with a unknown psychopath

Okay, so, my information at this point is sadly limited, I'll update when I get more information.
Essentially, one of my best friends got his phone stolen, a Palm Treo. Whoever stole it had a laugh sending dirty pictures in messages to some of his friends, no big deal. But then started sending his ex threatening message to the tune of "I'm going to cut you up and there's nothing Erik can do about it." This is one example of messages that have been sent. (and hey, maybe it's just the dude having a laugh by sending creepy texts to whoever the original owner had sent the most messages to)
The scary part about this is that, as a smart phone, it likely had contact information beyond her number stored in there.
Has anyone had to deal with a situation like this before, and what should we be doing at this point. I've already told them to call the police and get them involved as soon as possible.
Report it to the police, which should have been done as soon as the phone was stolen. You can get away with a lot over the phone, but threats are actionable just about everywhere.
Also, report the theft to your carrier, which also should have been done immediately. They likely have procedures in place to aid in any possible investigation. Don't just have the phone shut off - let the company handle it as they do, as they might want to keep the phone active if it could aid in catching the thief.
There's probably not much he can do himself aside from notifying everybody whose contact information was on the phone.
Ugh...that sucks. Someone stole my phone and checked my voice mails a few times. I called them and they answered about 3 times before turning the phone off(because I kept calling). At first I thought it was a friend, so I kept saying silly things, but then I realized it wasn't it was even creepier...because they would pant and moan whenever I called. Ew.
Police. Which should have been done immediately. Not to mention that 'cells' (an area of service) for cells phones are actually quite small (theres just lots of them), and so tracking is pretty easy. Worth looking into, they might be able to find him, now that its gone into death threats, which are federal offenses.
threats are classified as assault, if the person has the means to do the thing they threaten. pretty serious shit, if they are joking around... the police will teach him a lesson.
