the question that cares

Okay I have been putting off making this thread for way too long now.

Let's talk about motherfucking

jack1dp0.jpg

This series was my first PC gaming experience, and still my most memorable.

See, way back when I was a freshman in high school, somebody brought a copy of volume 3 of YDKJ into the gifted kids' room. (Don't ask me how I qualified for such a thing, I'm not entirely sure either) I only got to play a couple quick 7-question rounds before the game was barred from the school for being too offensive, but the damage was done: I needed more.

Cut to a few months later, and my family finally actually had a computer (or at least something that barely qualified to be a computer... some things never change, eh?) and I wandered into a Funcoland (again, this was way back before they seemed to fall off the face of earth round herr) and what do I see?

Why, this thing:

ydkjjumbogz4.jpg

containing the first four volumes and the first of the two netshow collections

I don't remember the exact price but it was hella expensive for the time and my age, but fuck what else was I gonna spend money on, it's not like I had a social life

aaaaaaaaanyway I took that fucker home and played the hell out of it and developed an insatiable hunger for fake gameshows with humor and trivia and also fake commercials when you were done

I craved more Jack like a... something that craves another... thing... a hell of a lot

there is a website

right here:

www.youdontknowjack.com

where you can by XP (and in some cases Vista) - compatable versions of most of the YDKJ games

and can play the online flash-based seven question games and individual dis-or-dats that have periodically appeared for several months now

the site calls it a BETA so I guess they are working toward something?

I hope so, but it's taking a hell of a long time

screenshots, I guess:

impossiblequestionfc0.png
ydkjbabyquestionsm2.jpg

if any of you are interested in trying the series, I recommend volume 3 and The Ride

The Ride is the series' highest point, but it's also the wierdest one and may be jarring for newcomers

here is video of a dude playing volume 3:

    each volume does something different

I'm pretty sure the ride just boots you back to the desktop (don't so this, since the ride is episodic and you'll miss one)

I have a friend who was really into this, but I really couldn't tolerate playing it with him.

He's slower at reading than either of my nieces (one of which is 9, my friend being 24)

Because the announcer would list things off faster than he could read, he always insisted on waiting until the announcer finished reading out loud the question and every single answer before I was allowed to buzz in. Every single time.

Yeah, I stopped playing YDKJ with him very quickly.

I'm thinking of buying the Sports, Movies, and TV editions

because those are the only volumes I haven't played (save for the two PS1 versions, which are fuckass hard to find)

I used to see the PS1 versions of this game in bargian bins way back when. I never gave them so much as a second glance because this was the era of a ton of gameshow games and I just thought they were another shitty cash in like who wants to be a millionaire or whatever.

it was only about 6 months ago I found out what they were, and now I regret not playing them when they were popular.

My parents were addicted to these for a bit. I think they have 1-3 and Movies and Sports editions.
God nothing was better than screwing somebody on a question you knew they couldn't answer.
Conversly being able to answer the question and then screwing them was just as good.

    Yes!

I always feel like if a round goes by and at least one screw wasn't used, we've been doing it wrong.

When it's a hard question, you "screw" them by forcing them to answer. It's an in-game mechanic.

    It's called "Screw Your Neighbor".

In every game, you get one screw (a literal screw, like we're talking hardware store screw) per round. After you buzz in, if you still have your screw, you can hit the "s" key instead of picking an answer to use your screw. (If there are three players, you then have to pick who you're using the screw on.) It forces them to take a stab at the question. If they get it wrong, they lose the money like normal and you feel good about being a dick. You have to be careful, though, not only because you only get one per round, but also because, if they get the answer right, not only do they get the money for the question, but you lose it.

The Ride had a special version where you mashed the "s" key, shooting screws at the screen, covering up the question and answers, meaning whoever you were screwing had to read quick.

Whenever the answer responses were audio choices, I'd always screw the person I was playing against before the game could even play the audio cues.

there was a kids' verison of YDKJ called Headrush that only got one volume

it was pretty easy (as you'd expect) but it had some fun stuff going on

while the main YDKJ have generally been pretty plain and straightforward in their visuals, headrush was all crazy and cartoony
