Does Biden support abstinence-only education? I've spent some time on google trying to confirm it after seeing someone mention it on Shakespeare Sister, and all I found was that, in 1996, he voted yes on $75 million for abstinence education. Was abstinence only education even around in 1996, or was that amount meant to supplement rather than undermine comprehensive sex education?

Not really. I don't see the parallels between Gore and Biden - two politicians with very different styles.

p.s. - The quote used in the new McCain ad, where Biden says "I would be honored to run with or against John McCain because I think the country would be better off" ... that was on The Daily Show.

In that context it makes a lot more sense, as a joke basically saying that the country would be best served by Joe Biden getting into office one way or another.

A good question. Worst case scenario: He does strictly support abstinence-only education. Obama has already made it clear he takes sexual education seriously, and even believes (rightfully so) that some levels of sexual education even start in the elementary years. Not Cosmo stuff, of course, but the medical sides. So there's that.

He's not an abstinence-only man, this I know. He voted on the following bill as well as the previously mentioned 75M one.

    "

Voted YES on $100M to reduce teen pregnancy by education & contraceptives

Appropriation to expand access to preventive health care services; Bill S.Amdt. 244 to S Con Res 18 ; vote number 2005-75 on Mar 17, 2005

Believing family planning could help prevent many unwanted pregnancies, Senator Biden has consistently supported Title X - the nation's family planning program - that provides information, services, support, and research for family planning."

If you look on the On The Issues page he also supported 100 million for normal sex ed. I think the $75 million was just tucked into some combined bill or another he didn't want to derail on that one point.

I can't believe everything related to sex is still such a hot issue in the US, it's like you guys are 40 years behind my country with this.

That is my cat. I've had her for a few years now, so she's past the adorable gangly phase and has moved into puddle-o-cat territory. I'd never seen one that kind of silver with dark grey striping before I got her, but now that I'm looking for it there seem to be a lot of cats exactly like that (kind of like how all pure black cats look alike).

Ok, deeply tangential issue. When did "tire swing" or "riding the tire swing" enter political shorthand, and what exactly does it mean. Knowing Fournier (AP Washington bureau chief, former Pub press guy and lobbied hard by the McCain campaign to come on board, olol liberal media) and the article in question I assume it's some variant on concern trolling, but what are the specifics?

I do find myself confused by this strategy. The only way it could theoretically work is if they put out so many wrong things so quickly Obama doesn't have time to respond to each, but they're so damn slow. Though I suppose that retarded celebrity-household budget one from yesterday is going to slide by unanswered.

It should be vastly amusing. Biden won't pull any punches, that's for sure.

All of my friends and family are very, very happy with this choice. Even some of my friends' Republican parents are happy because of Biden's considerable foreign policy experience. I think Obama made the right choice in balancing his ticket.

Man, I was getting drunk last night when everyone was finding out it was Biden. Then my friend gets on his laptop to look at news and he's all nonchalantly "Biden is Obama's VP."

"MAN WHUT!? SERIOUSLY!? Lemme see that!"

Unfortunately, it was hampered by him being all "McCain's gonna win. Nobody's gonna vote for Obama." I just rose my hand and said "I am!"

I was thinking of going out for a bit, but I'm afraid I'll get caught up in things and forget to watch Obama / Biden speak and be awesome together. Biden is a much better choice than some seem to think; I almost would have preferred him as an attack dog, but this should be fun if nothing else. The man is absolutely FIERCE in his criticisms and he's very well spoken and easy to understand when he makes them.

I can understand the fear of a president getting shot, especially if you were a baby boomer and went through the JFK assassination. Something you don't want to go through ever again, even if it is naive thinking.

But I can't understand how you wouldn't fear a man that is more likely to die of old age while in office. Or at least contract a debilitating disease like Alzheimer's or something.
