Anyone know some good free CD burning utility(s) for OS X? I have an old copy of Toast Lite from back in the day, but it's not compatible with both Tiger and Intel, and I really need some way to do some copying. (And disk utility is out because I need to copy disks that have an alternate Windows session that doesn't show in OS X.)
So basically like the recently-updated stuff that actually has a basic "copy" button is Toast and maybe some other useless apps. (I've downloaded a lot off Macupdate now, and they all like have less features than what's built into the OS, or aren't UB... and I gotta say I don't really want to use Rosetta to burn a disc)
Man, I hate booting into Windows for stuff like this...

As far as I can tell, Burn is no good for copies (needs an image to work with, and getting a good one with both Mac and PC data is the whole problem) and Parallels was basically awful when I tried it (super slow since I only have 1 GB, and kept making XP want to reactivate itself and adding bootloaders that sometimes just froze), which doesn't give me high hopes for the competition, though I will give it a look.
Edit: Oh fucking hell. Tried a Disk Utility image for the hell of it, and it didn't even result in Mac-compatible disc. Wtf?
I'm not really an expert, but I'm fairly certain the disc I need to copy works in Mac OS and Windows by having two filesystems. Every imaging method I've encountered so far seems to involve going through the OS X filesystem, rather than doing any kind of raw data dump.
Edit #2: w00t. I think I got Toast Lite to work. It complained about not being able to unmount the volume, but after I clicked "copy" twice it started working.
Most of my games on it I run under windows via bootcamp, more modern 3d games make it hurt. For example, I run Half-Life 2 at 1280x800 at all the minimum graphic settings and it runs at just enough of an acceptable frame rate, if I up any of the graphics settings it becomes unplayable for me.
Older games like Red Alert 2, Homeworld etc all run great (these can be tweaked via reg tweaks to force them to run at 1280x800, no aspect ratio distortion either)
However, i'll be buying a Macbook Pro very soon. My brother lives and works in Sydney and via some government/business thing he can get roughly 45% off the price of laptops... so, i'll be buying a MB Pro for slightly less than I bought my Macbook for..

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.
So I'm taking a trip for work this weekend, and I'm looking to do some gaming on my ibook during the flight.
I've got a copy of zork that I've had gathering dust on my shelf for god knows how long, but does anyone know of any free games I can play on it? (And please don't say EV Nova. I used to own a license for it, and played it to death, but I can't find it and it's not worth purchasing twice.)

It's not free, but Enigmo 2 is well worth the money and will, given the chance, consume your soul.
For days after getting into it, you will dream of lasers and nonstop dripping water. Trust me.

The problem is that most of the 3D features (even the basic transform and lightening) is done by the driver. The shared RAM just adds to the overall slowness.
Intel integrated graphics needs to die in a fire. Personally I was pretty miffed when I saw the MacBook specs the first time. Even a current on-board low-end solution (nvidia, ATI) would be the better choise. Well, Apple has a track record of skimping on graphics on its low end line. (iBooks with just 16MB vRAM, mac mini G4 released with a graphic card which doesn't even support the corevideo effects of OSX 10.4 etc.)

so I'm looking to make movies and I'm looking to upgrade my computer. I was already looking at a mac, but seeing the nice software it comes with, I think it's a good choice.
By "making movie" I mean both home made stuff, and also stuff for classes I plan to be taking (as well as the portfolio I need to make to get into these classes).
my question is, will all (or nearly all) cameras work? I don't think there would be much or any sort of format problems but I want to check...camera reccomendations is a different thread but I want to know if there are any to avoid. Also, I don't know how much power is required for what I want to do, but I was originally planning on an iMac. Would a Mac Pro be required?
thanks mac peopel! I hope to be one of you within 6 months but I want to ask this question now so I know what I'm planning on.
Variable: Any camera with a Firewire (or iLink or IEEE 1394) port will work quite excellent. (May have some problems with 24p modes of super high-end cameras if you have older software, but I doubt that'll happen.)
In terms of software, iMovie is fine for home video/YouTube stuff, but you need to get Premiere Pro, Avid, or Final Cut Pro if you're going to be doing anything professional. Not that iMovie can't handle simple stuff, but you don't want to sound like an idiot when talking to professionals. :P ("Durr, I maek film with iMovie.") They also have a more professional workflow for professional needs, as you might find iMovie limits various editing things you might need. If you have an Apple Store near you, you can play with it for free.
New iMacs are perfectly fine. I recommend LOTS of RAM. 2GB minimum. And the bigger the hard drive, the better. Not only because raw video files are huge, but bigger drives have faster disc access making things smoother. I'd only get a Mac Pro if you're doing tons of post-processing that you need quad-CPU buffered ECC RAM for. (And if you're getting a Mac Pro, I'd also wire at least two hard drives to RAID 0. Hard drive speed is a major limiting factor. But Mac Pros are expensive as is. :P)
Actually, you might be able to get away with a super-high end Mini, but the integrated graphics might bottleneck some of the hardware rendering.

thanks man. I'll start doing more specific camera hunting closer to when I actually get the computer and software.
I'll probably go with the 20.1 inch imac and get the larger HD and 2gigs of ram (3 if I can afford it when the time comes)
thanks again. I figured I'd have to get some extra software as well but I like that it at least gives me something off the bat just to mess with. I do have an Apple store near me which helps a lot.
edit - I also want to say I'm a newbie to the camera world, I know almost nothing, obviously have a lot to learn, but thanks for the quick answer.

It's highly likely this has already been mentioned, but a search came up empty for me.
As the owner of a slightly older (PowerBook G4) Mac, mine didn't come with all the whiz-bang accessories that some of the newer ones come with...one of which is a remote control. I use my laptop all the time hooked up to my TV for watching video (and for audio as well, through the stereo), and I had been using a wireless mouse as a "poor man's remote."
Well, enter Remote Buddy. Why did this little program excite me so? Wiimote support. I already happen to own a Wii, so I already have Wiimotes sitting around. This programs takes all of about 5 seconds to configure for Wiimote support, and even has default behaviors included for popular apps (including things like iTunes, VLC, MPlayerOSX, etc). Unfortunately it doesn't use the motion sensors or IR sensor for any sort of mouse emulation (there is another freeware app that does, but it's keymapping is woefully inadequate). But over all it's pretty schweet.
It does, of course, support other remotes as well (including the Apple remote).
Alas, it is not free (though the 60 day trial is). But it's only on RC1, so they're offering a special price before the "official" release. 9.99 Euro, which works out to about $13 US (they only accept Euro, though, so expect a small additional charge to your card for currency conversion).
I'm highly considering ordering this. I can see myself using the shit out of it. Sorry if it's already been mentioned a hundred times before, but I didn't find it. I was just fucking around on google last night and thought to myself, "Self, the Wii remote is just a bluetooth device...I bet somebody has written some sort of app to use it with a computer...possibly with a Mac." Not only had somebody done so, but there was actually an incredibly functional and well polished piece of software available for it. I was a happy camper.
I figure if at least one other person who did not know about this benefits from this post, my job is done.
Now, a question about this software. Does anybody here who might have used it know how to shut down or somehow put to sleep the Wiimote? Because, you know, the batteries die eventually, and I can't find a way other than manually shutting off bluetooth on my laptop.
I believe the thing turns off through lack of use normally, and quitting remote buddy will de-sync it, also turning it off.
Just lost my old IBM in a tragic Valentine's related accident and decided to go with a mac. I purchased a nice clean ibook 12" 1.33Ghz. So far I am really enjoying the experience and the size/battery life, the selling points, are really adding up to what I was looking for.
Now, the reason for having a light machine with great battery life is this: I write... for a living. As was mentioned above I was previously doing so on a non-mac machine. I made certain to install mac Office X on this machine but it seems that none of my older word files will open. They were all run in Office XP on my earlier system.
Is there a simple, 'I'm just being an idiot,' solution to this?

By not open do you mean...causes a burning sensation in your pants when you double click them or does Word just sit there like a dumb child? First thing to try is drag them onto the Word icon in the Dock. Do you have any examples of these unopenable files? What version of Office do you have for the Mac by the way, there are thus far two OSX versions; Office v.X and Office 2004. If you're not running either of those you've got an old version of Office that requires Classic.

The Word program is Word: Mac v.X (So, Office v.X, I'm assuming). The Word files are all simple text documents "title bla bla.doc" and the likes. I'll keep finagling about. I was just curious as to the existence of one of those simple solutions which I have stumbled on to solve my previous difficuities.

Well that is really weird. Does Word et al launch properly? Can you just double click the icon and get Word to open up? If yes can you go to File -> Open and open up the file? If your documents are pretty basic you can open them up without issue in TextEdit (/Applications/TextEdit) and save them. Unlike Notepad on Windows, TextEdit is actually pretty damn useful. It supports styles and uses OSX's system-wide spell checking. If you add a word to the spellcheck dictionary in TextEdit it will be available in a Safari text edit box and other programs as well.
If you're interested in writing and only writing there's a badass app called WriteRoom. It takes up the whole screen and lets you just write. The display is pretty configurable, you're not stuck with the default green on black. It supports pretty much all the formatting available to RTF (bold, underline, outline, bullets) and can save out plain ASCII/UTF-8 and RTF.
I don't know if I mentioned this in my initial post, but I am trying to get these files from an External Hard drive; perhaps that's the issue?
Either way, I am able to open word to a nice fresh blank document but I still cannot open a file from the hard drive, even through the file > open menu. The larger documents which I have tried opening give me a "Is this really a word doc?" message, while the smaller ones, when I click on them, simply disappear into the unknown abyss. This is most distressing.
I saved my old laptop's hard drive and am putting that in an enclosure and plan to use that as an external hard drive so all the files I backed up with this hard drive have yet another back up. But, for the most part, this is all rather distressing and I would like to know what the deal is.
The ExHdd is an ACOM Data 160GB, if that helps anything.
Was the drive originally used on a Windows system and is the format of that drive NTFS? Try copying one or more of those files to your local drive and try to open them and see what happens.
Alright, I've tried both of your suggestions, both loading the files directly onto the MachHD and then I went through the installation of neooffice. I've been able to open one doc, unfortunately it was kind of a lackluster document of notes for books. Everything else I try to open gives me an input/output error. I've tried opening these files in both my version of word and neooffice.
Thanks for your help so far, I'll try that other link a little later on today.
I get the feeling this may be more of a problem with my hard drive than anything. None of my music files (in AAC) or my Movie files are even showing up when I open the EXT icon on my desktop.

Yeah, that sounds like its buggered.
Turn the HD off, stop using it until you have some storage to copy every file across, then try to salvage what you've got.
Office v.X should be fine until Office 2008 is released later this year. The main differences between Office v.X and Office 2004 were changes to PowerPoint and Entourage. Word and Excel behave almost identically. The latest Office 2004 updates from the MacBU added some support for Spotlight and container some performance fixes for Intel Macs running the apps in Rosetta. The Spotlight importers for Word documents that come with Tiger work just as well for documents created with Office v.X and 2004, all the 2004 update adds are importers for Excel and PowerPoint documents.
From what I was told by the MacBU folks at MacWorld Office 2008 is due out later this year. They gave some pretty impressive demos of it at the show. The biggest feature is the fact it's a Universal Binary. The interface in my opinion is really well done. It uses a combination of Office 2007's ribbon layout and a more Mac-like toolbar/inspector. The ribbon is used as a gallery presenting different styles and themes for objects. The toolbar and inspectors are used for all the other functionality (formatting etc.). The interface is now also a proper Aqua HIG document based design. At first blush it looks and feels a little like iWork (with a lot more functionality).
Yeah...sigh. Well, hopefully I will be able to get all of the old files I need when I stick my old hard drive in an enclosure. Other than that I guess I'll just have to pull my music files from my ipod and then put them into itunes and then into the music folder of a freshly formatted external hard drive.
Can't remember if I asked this here already, but I haven't found a good answer yet:
The MBP has Front Row and a remote, right? Basically made for watching shit on a TV/projector, right? And it has some sort of optical/digital out audio jack, perfect for merging with the digital DVI signal and produce HDMI output with video + audio, right?
Wrong!
But why the fuck isn't there a smooth cable solution for MBP which takes the digital audio + video and smacks a HDMI plug at the other end so I can get a AppleTV killer from my MBP?
(EDIT: I know SlingCatcher will do this wirelessly soon, but I want to watch some 720p video NOW, damnit!)

Yeah, that sounds like its buggered.
Turn the HD off, stop using it until you have some storage to copy every file across, then try to salvage what you've got.
