Monitor not working properly

So I came home today to find the family computer is messing up. My personal computer is fine so I'm making the post from this one, but understandably the rest of the family wants this fixed.
All the cables seem to be connected, and the monitor turns on, but it only displays an image for about two seconds before it just... stops. It still has the powered on light, but the image completely goes. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?
comes on for 2 seconds at boot up, or comes on for 2 seconds if you shut it off and power it up?

Two seconds after turning the monitor off and powering it up. You can switch it on and off and keep getting the image indefinitely, but you could see how that might be troublesome.
... Had this happen with a monitor plugged into a garbage power bar at work, at least it hasn't acted up since plugging it straight to the wall.
Does your laptop have a monitor port you could test it with to see if its the monitor or the video card if the power thing doesn't help?
BTW, that monitor I mentioned was plugged into the same power bar for probably a month with no problems. Thats why I might sound a little skeptical about it, but suggest it at the same time.

Ah, tried it but it didn't work. I've got a desktop PC myself, so I could just unhook the monitors and switch them and see if that works.
