If you are going by Air, you should probably get a passport. If you're going by ground, I think a birth certificate + drivers licence/state ID still works.

They will ask for some sort of ID when you come into Canada.

This question seems to be asked every couple of days on here. You currently (until like June or July 09) do not need a passport when traveling from the US to Canada or back by land or sea, a birth certificate + driver's license will suffice. You DO need one if traveling by plane.

Even if your trip is by land/sea, if you have time it's recommended that you get a passport because it's just easier.

I finally got my passport about 6 months ago for mainly going Can->US and I can tell you it seems to be much easier. With just the BC/License we tended to get a lot more questions and hassle.

The only thing that slows us now is when they flip through and see my wife has been to China. Always have to wait for them to do some voodoo when they notice it.

Are you kidding me? Mine was over 100 dollars. It might be seven if you're renewing it or something.

My passport (during the backlog of doom last year) ended up costing just shy of $200 total when you add it all up. Passport photos, a spare copy of my birth certificate (and expedited service fees for that), the passport application fee, the execution fee, the $60 expedition fee for the passport itself...
