What's Operation Flashpoint you ask?
I'll let Mr. wikipedia answer that one.
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, sometimes shortened to Operation Flashpoint, and abbreviated OFP, is a tactical shooter and battlefield simulator video game developed by Bohemia Interactive Studio and published by Codemasters. The game has been based on the military virtual simulator VBS1. It was released on June 22, 2001 in Europe and August 30, 2001 in North America. Set on a group of fictitious islands in 1985, Operation Flashpoint puts the player on one of three sides in a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Soviet forces. The Resistance is the third playable faction. Two expansion packs were released; Gold Upgrade, which included Red Hammer, a campaign from the Soviet perspective, and Resistance, which introduced various new features and improved graphics and sound effects. Operation Flashpoint was praised for its attention to realistic combat

How is this game any different from other tactical shooters I've played?
Sheer scale. In OFP you can have mulitple squad of up to twelve men each engaging each other on massive islands. Tanks have multiple postions to man, and transport choppers can as passagers as thier real life counter-parts. The game's campaign provides a varied set of missions as several different characters, and you can set up even more using the game's mission editor. Almost any senario can be concoted in this manner, from ambushes, to special ops missions in the dead of night, to helicopter assaults and amphibious ops.

You've intrigued me, but it seems I'd have to sell my soul to afford a game this awesome!
Luckily, you can find the game on amazon for about 15 bucks. You'll want to purchase the "Game of the Year" edition as it includes all the expasion packs and upgrades relased. After that, download the 1.96 final patch and you're good to go! If you're a Gametap subscriber, you can also download the "Game of the Year" version, but you won't be able to use any of the fantastic mods and addons from the community.

I'll throw in some more screens for good measure.

Was this because I mentioned it in the other thread?

I love this game so much, I just wish it were more stable and had a better UI.

    This game was insanely hard.

Also, I liked playing it...wrong. My favorite moments came during the "at rest, soldier" between-fight times, where I'd pick up a gun, start laying into my fellow men, and see how long I could survive before being mowed down as the traitor that I am.

Amen. I couldn't get past one of the first missions. There was this convoy moving inbetween two hills that I had to ambush, and I could never get past it. I'd try for hours and hours, never could beat it.

This is one of my favourite games ever. I love it and I'e got the Resistance disc in my computer right now.

I just wish ArmA ran well on my computer. I'd love to give that a proper try.

Still unstable and has a horrible UI, plus higher system requirements (as if the first OFP didn't run bad enough).

Yes and no. While ArmA has better graphics, essintally the gameplay is the same as Flashpoint expect buggier. ArmA also only has two islands , as opposed to OFP's 4 with the expansion. Also, the mod community for ArmA isn't as large, party due to the fact that the game was realsed so recently, and due to the annocement of ArmA II soon after. That's not to say that ArmA isn't a bad game, it's just not that differrent from OFP, imho.

    1) I personally have no bugs in ArmA. have you tried the latest version (1.14) ?

    2) horrible UI? what? its like practically the same as OFP

and yes the gameplay is pretty much identical. The new advanced AI they're toting for ArmA 2 gets me happy in the pants.

also the mod community is plenty large

This game wasn't just hard. It was just one notch under impossible. I would have parties, if you will, in which seven or eight of my friends would play the game. We never once finished a mission.

I played OFP at lan parties in high school team vs team was much more gratifying, we'd have 3 guys at one table against 3 at another and beat the shit out of each other.

To be fair I don't actually own ArmA, and the last time i played it was patch 1.08. I do share your high hopes for ArmA II. I'm not so sure about OPeration Flashpoint 2. But I will probally end up purchasing both, as this is the first time there's been any real competion in the soldier-sim genre.

    EDIT:
Perhaps we should get a game on going for Operation Flashpoint/ ArmA?
I don't have any experience in running one, so perhaps somebody else could take up the mantle?

I remember the first time I played the demo of this, it was the mission were you had to attack a village but then needed to be evacuated by helicopter. Only the first time I tried only I survived and I had to crawl for 1km back to camp whilst being shelled, it was the single most harrowing experience I've ever had in game. I had the full version but I haven't been able to find it for years.

This and "Hidden and Dangerous 2" would have been simply amazing games if not for the shitty user interface and realism-over-fun aspect. I mean a certain degree of realism is fun, but this was stupid. In real life sure you can see a guy in a field on the horizon, but here your situational awareness is limited to the screen on your PC.

No, as in it is safer to travel in an un-amoured truck, given the lethality of just a single LAW or RPG.

It's actually much harder to hit a truck with an RPG than a BMP or M113. Rockets will rightfully go straight through the fabric.

The last mission I recall playing had to deal with a convoy of tanks (possible other vehicles) coming down a long stretch of road, where you had to blow up land mines or something. But yea, this game was insanely hard, I think I played around with this game for a bit then I think I really got into Vietcong (uncensored version)

I still have my install discs, but not sure I want to re-install :P

I'm pretty sure OFP is more difficult then real life. Precisely because of the insane AI that it is.

If you're willing to look past some problems, such as the dated graphics, and clunky interface, you can have some awesome expirences, particulary in co-op and multi.

Hell, after I played Gothic 3, I think I'm immune to bugs. And graphics don't bother me(Dwarf Fortress) So, I might look into getting this.

I played this a lot years ago, and revisited it following a PC upgrade to try out the mission editor with enough processing power to handle HUGE battles.

So a while back, I got nostalgic and bought it for the OXBox. Turned it off as soon as I realized the vertical axis couldn't be inverted. WTF was up with that?

Eagerly awaiting the new OFP for the 360.

The Finnish Defense Forces Mod is one of the finer OFP applications. Very well polished, nice little graphical and audio upgrades, and packed with excellent new islands, a new campaign and a few dozen extra co-op missions.
