I dunno about no subscription issue, but the extra column is there because someone turned on thread icons as can be seen in the thumbs-down icon on the flu thread.

The column only shows when I subscribe to that thread, not any other in the whining forum. Is that normal?

I'm assuming that is the only thread from that forum on your subscription list?
Because that forum has thread icons turned on, the subscription list adds the column in anticipation of the thread possibly having a thread icon.
