    I wouldn't say people like Gabe Newell or Bill Gates are internet celebrities, they're more prominent industry figures, chocolate rain guy fits the mold better, or that chick from myspace that got a reality show. People that became "famous" because of their internet exploits

    I think you're mis-labelling these people. Do you mean "people who are more famous amongst the traditional demographics of the internet" ? Because those traditional demographics don't even make up the majority of internet users any more. Neither are those people famous because of anything in particular to do with the internet.
