Another year's PAX event has come to a close.
My first, and only previous PAX was the 2006 event. That year, I was a panelist, and had a special badge that took me to the head of any line-- yet the overcrowding issues in the Meydenbauer Center were still severe enough that I got very little enjoyment out of that event. This year, though, I was there as a fan only... and PAX 2008 is easily the best convention I've ever attended. I'll go into the reasons why in a moment, but first I'd like to thank everyone that worked hard to make this weekend a reality.
Thank you to the Enforcers for putting up with a lot of crap in the interest of maintaining order. Yours is a tough job-- and you're doing it on a volunteer basis, at that. But without your diligence and professionalism, this event would not be possible.
Thank you to all of the exhibitors for the amazing games on display this weekend. I'm sure I need say no more, especially for those of you that got to spend any time on stage at the Rock Band booth.
Thank you to all of the guests, panelists, and bands that gave up your time for our entertainment. To a person, everyone that I saw this weekend was gracious and considerate-- I can't tell you how many people asked Wil Wheaton for pictures and autographs, and he was always happy to accomodate them. It's nice to have a convention where people like Mr. Wheaton are representative of all the other guests: they're happy to be here, and we're happy to have them.
And thank you very much to all of the awesome people in attendance. With this many people attending, there are always going to be some jackasses, and anyone who ran into such folks would be likely to remember them most clearly. But I prefer to think of the amazing people in the lines, in the concerts, in the exhibition halls... Every morning, my first stop was the Rock Band 2 booth. And without exception, I would always make at least three friends in that line, because this is the event where wonderful people like the PAX attendees are truly in their element. It's here where we can most clearly see the best side of gamers.
Naturally, there's plenty of room for improvement on this year's PAX, and there are already a few threads on this forum for discussion of that. But for me, PAX 2008 was a huge, huge improvement over PAX 2006. The venue in downtown Seattle is superb: much bigger than the Meydenbauer, with tons of great stuff to see and do in the vicinity. And with its added space, the crowds-- though larger-- were not nearly as stifling as during my last visit. Best of all, PAX 2008 made more use of the additional space with a huge exhibition hall and tons of panels, plus wireless lounges on almost every floor. More so than ever, there was an insane amount of stuff to do at this year's event.
So for me, PAX 2008 was the Walt Disney World of gaming. It can be an expensive trip, and you'll have to wait in a lot of lines... but at the end of the day, it's the happiest place on Earth.
