Determining if I have a broken leg...

So basically I'm trying to figure out if my leg is broken or if I just smacked the muscle really hard and damaged that. The bone in question if my fibula, I already fractured this bone once, on my left leg.

Any medics in the house? How can I figure out if its broken/sprained/fractured/whatever without getting X-Rays?

Basically I took a nasty fall off of a bed and my leg whipped around and slammed onto the edge of a wooden display case that was on the ground. The point of impact was about half way between my ankle and my knee and that is where it is still sensitive to the touch. It doesn't hurt when I put weight on it which leads me to believe that its not broken, but yet when I walk and put pressure on it, it starts to hurt, but I'm thinking this could be because I'm putting more stress on the muscle, but I'm no doctor.

I had a similar experience a few years ago when I still played football. I got cut-blocked from the side across my left leg. I thought it was only bruised and just taped it up tight. The symptoms were the same as yours, and since they didn't go away, I eventually went to the doctor after 3-4 days (can't remember exactly). After x-rays, the doctor said it was a 'green stick' fracture. This is basically a crack across the bone, but not bad enough to make the bone move. It didn't need a cast, but I did need to be on crutches for a week or so.

The doctor also said that there was a possibility for the crack to expand if it was hit again, and if that happens, it can be very bad. The bone will have started to heal, then get moved, and start to heal again, causing a lump of scar tissue on the bone which can lead to bone spurs or arthritis. At a more extreme level, if the break gets worse marrow can get out and you can get a very bad infection in both the bone and in your blood.

I am not a doctor by any means and this is just one anecdotal example, but I would recommend that if your leg still hurts in a few days, or if there is any extreme swelling or color change, get an x-ray.

If you do decide to get it checked out don't go to an emergency room. They will charge you a triage fee of $100-$300 (depending on where you are at) plus whatever it costs for any treatment they give you. Try to find a walk in clinic.

That is one thing I didn't think about, there hasn't been any color change but it is a little swollen and tough on the area. If it was just muscle it would probably have bruised or something right?

The bruise could be down in the muscle with the blood not able to reach the surface yet.

I used to get things like that playing hockey if a puck hit me just right. The muscle would get swollen with a kind of lump in the middle. It wouldn't bruise for a few days and the bruise would sometimes show up 'downhill' from the actual impact site like in my ankle if I had been hit in leg. I think its due to the blood released by the contusion (I think thats the right word, means bruise) flowing down through the tissue and up to the skin.

again, not a doctor, but I did get hurt a lot

Yeah, there's a reason doctors take X-Rays. Because even highly-trained folks can't definitively tell whether a bone is broken or not just by visual examination (unless say, said bone is at a 90-degree angle in the middle).

My obvious suggestion is to go see a doctor right away, but I live in Canada where that's free. I can't really sympathize with not wanting to seek medical attention based purely on financial reasons, so all I can really suggest is waiting a day and seeing what it does. If it's still really painful or starts to swell up badly, etc., go seek medical attention. Either way, rest and elevate it; it's not going to make it any worse.

Just go to the doctor. This isn't something you can, or should, self-diagnose.

If you really really really CAN'T get to a doctor, here are some tips:

Your bones are completely encircled by nerves or something or other. The basic idea is that if your bone is fractured cracked anywhere, pushing on the bone on any side of it will still hurt. A bruise only hurts where the bruise is, while a broken/cracked bone hurts on when touched on every side of the limb.

This is complicated by having two bones in your lower leg, so pushing on one side of your leg doesn't necessarily check your bones. hence, go to a doctor!

I'm fairly sure if you miss-manage these things, broken or not, it can lead to a whole heap of issues with that leg.
you gotta go see a doctor and check out what's what with your leg man, lest you damage it more by taking care of it the wrong way on your own..

It should have been the ER straight away. Bone infection, man! You do not want to risk that shit.

ER or not depends on your area. I know a walk-in clinic near me that does x-rays and the line up is always hours shorter then any ER.

Going to the doctor is a good idea. You should go to the doctor. Hell, looking at the time of your last post you probably are at the doctor.

But you probably didn't break it.

    a) You can stand on it
    b) It takes a fuckton of impact force to break a bone. Bones break because of twisty forces.

indeed. the only time I've ever broken a bone was from an impact force.

Did you not hear the part about he should go to the doctor? I'm trying to balance my desire to play armchair physician with my desire to not give terrible advice.

Anyway, for the record, I think that the OP should go to the doctor. I am not a doctor. I didn't even formerly play one on TV.

There should really be a sticky that says "If you are worried about whether you have a serious injury or a not-so-serious injury, go to a doctor/hospital/shaman. We cannot help." I can't believe that anyone would even debate going to the doctor. Didn't you see the House where the patient died because of a tiny bone fracture that was poisoning his body? Listen to Dr. House!!!

Indeed. I don't have any insurance, and I don't go unless I'm quite certain I absolutely have to. I would if I could afford it, but I imagine the OP is in the same boat as a number of us. That being said, you really need to go get it checked out. This is one of those times where you do what you have to so you can afford it.

So I went to the doctor about a half hour ago, he acted very calm and didn't really think there was a problem even if it was fractured and for this long without treatment. He gave me a referral to get an X-Ray tomorrow.
