Join the GTVA Fleet! FREESPACE 2 (56K is hit with friendly fire from the Actium)
It's hard as hell to hit anything with the 4 gun rack, though. The Apollo's guns were perfectly set. The problem THERE was with the missile banks: they were out in the middle of fucking nowhere, so hitting anything with more than one missile at a time took a miracle.
I didn't have any problems with the gun placement of the Myrmidon. Of course, I am in the minority, but I think that is the true "hurdle" of the Myrmidon. If you "get" it, you ruin stuff; if you don't, you fly something else.
I also didn't know it could equip the Cyclops until recently, which makes it that much more awesome in my book. Replace the Subachs with Maxims and you ruin corvettes and frigates. Hell, cruisers would be pretty sad too. "Oh it's just fighters, ignore them and go for the Urs-- oh shit!!"

EVE: Online - the most fun you will ever have not playing a game.
"Go up, thou bald head." -2 Kings 2:23
Whoa. While I was searching for my joystick I found this.
It had a thick layer of dust over it.
I never actually played it, but for some reason I do own it. I'm holding the manual in front of me right now and it looks really cool. At the back, they have complete operating statistics for the Messerschmitt, the Focke-Wulf, the Thunderbolt, the Mustang, the Flying Fortress, the Lightning, the Pfeil, and even some of the experimental turbojet fighters (which I guess gives it its name). They even modeled the cockpits, and all the gauges and buttons actually do something!
Is this game any good? It might be the awesomest World War II combat flight simulator I've never played.
Haven't played it, but the guy who made it also made X-Wing series. So I guess this is a sort of predecessor.
Would this work at all on a computer that can only barely run Freelancer (and that with everything set to low)? Alternately, would it work on vista without too much effort?

If your PC is fast enough to run Vista, I can't see it not running Freespace 2. The game's requirements are really low if you don't download the upgraded graphics tweaks. As for actually playing nice with Vista... no idea. I'll have a quick peak at the GOG forums for you.
Edit: It should run fine on Vista according to GOG's page for it. The funny thing is, the requirements they're listing are over double the stats than what my old PC (that ran the game beautifully) had. Not sure what to make of that.
Is it worth it trying to get the .10 VPs working if I have little or no clue about what I'm doing? What do you do with a Trunk build?
Trunk builds, you treat the same way as the 3.6.9 EXE. Simply drop them in the root FS2 folder with the launcher. With the .10 VPs, put them in a different MediaVP folder. Or just use them in place of the 3.6.8 Zetas. Using them with the 3.6.9 EXE is possible, you just can't use the normal maps and such. The Loki model, however, sometimes bugs out.
EDIT: Hahahah. Evangir I stole your thread out from under you!
EDIT2: Oh, yeah, if you can run Vista, you can run FS2 without the MediaVPs just fine. Mind you, it will look not nearly as nice, but hey, it's playable.
Sorry, that wasn't quite clear. My current computer is a laptop with 256Mb Ram and a 32Mb video card. My new computer (in a few months time) will run vista. I was asking if it will run with my current computer, or next one. Nevermind though, I'll just buy it for my new computer if it plays nicely with vista. Thanks.
Cool, cheers. It's just that on this page linked in the OP, there's three things to download. I just extract and stick them all in the Freespace 2 folder?
I remapped every function in FS2 to a gamepad yesterday. It makes it much quicker and easier to play when everything is in one place and mapped to customizable locations. A gaming keyboard thingy should do the same, and keep my right hand free for a mouse or joystick.
The newer 3.6.10 builds have widescreen support; I'm running it beautifully at 19x12. 'Fraid we'll be stuck with stretched images for multi, though.
I think the new builds may have TrackIR support, too...but I definitely don't play flight sims anywhere near enough to justify a purchase like that. :P
And yes, your keyboard will ever be useful. Even with a HOTAS, I still use the keyboard. Gotta command my wingmen somewhow. :P That, and I only map really important commands to the stick anyhow.
I'm escorting three ships to rendezvous with the Colossus, and I'm attacked by rebel bombers along the way. At the end of the mission, a Maelstrom-class ship named Fenris shows up and starts firing its beam weapon at my ships. I target its Weapon subsystem, but it seems like it keeps firing anyway. What subsystems do I have to destroy in order to keep it from firing its beam? I get berated at the debriefing if I don't.

There is no such thing as a Maelstrom class. It's a Fenris that's named the Maelstrom. :P
Killing the weapons subsystem only drops weapon accuracy. There's another targeting control you need.
You need to take out the forward beam cannon. Use the turret targeting control (K)
EDIT: I always just blew the entire damn thing up, Fenrises drop like flies against NTF Rebellion era weapons. I still got berated, but man, fuck that. I blew the entire thing up before the ships even got in range.

Ah okay. I didn't know it counted as a turret. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.
And yeah, I just blew it the hell up, but I wonder if I'm missing a medal or something. Oh well. I'll leave it for another playthrough.
I think [V] is the default key for targeting subsystems in your reticle - it should work for turrets and the like, as well. Useful if you don't want to cycle through all the ship's turrets/subsystems.
And yeah, the game is friggin' awesome. I've probably played it at least dozen times through since I got it back in '99, and despite knowing everything that'll happen along the way, I'll still come back to it, time and time again.
I'm actually on the last mission of that part of the campaign (yeah, I'm playing through again ). And not to overhype the game or anything, but it definitely gets better as you go.

I guess it's that time of year where I bust out the Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro (man, MS made some dope joysticks -- such a bummer when they were discontinued) and get my annual Freespace/MechWarrior groove on. To the install discs!

So I've been playing through the FS1 campaign and have been noticing some bugs during the training missions. In one where I was supposed to dodge missiles and use countermeasures, the ship never fired any missiles, but I stilled passed. In another where I was supposed to order my wingmates to disable a ship, they would just sit there beside it. I would order them individually and they would start to turn towards it, fire, and then turn back away. Ordering them to destroy it then ordering them to disable it again caused them to wake up. Now I'm kind of stuck. I'm supposed to use heatseaking missiles, but my ship isn't equipped with any missiles.... Unfortunately this one doesn't seem to let me past. Guess I'll check the forums.

I seriously feel like the designer felt that making it such an eyesore would make it harder to aim at or something.

Tell me that does not look fine.
Although I admit the reskin does make it MUCH more tolerable.

Honestly, I think the Erinyes is somewhat a throwback to the old Apollos, look at the gun banks on the bottom and the engine config.
So that's pretty cool.

It just FELT nicer.
I don't know what this says about me.

It takes me about 30 seconds to make a right 360 in a PERSEUS.
A fucking PERSEUS.
This is not acceptable for play. So, I need to get a new joystick. Until that time, I'm out of FS2ing in general.
Hamachi's been giving me problems too. The fates are conspiring against me.

Nope. Never gonna run. Never EVER going to run on that laptop.
EDIT: The MD5 hash is just to make sure you didn't get a corrupted file. The Shader VP goes in the root folder.
First time I played it IIRC I didn't even have a graphics card. Still managed to turn all the graphics options up quite high.
Or maybe...both a keyboard thingy AND a joystick?
Just get a joystick. You only really need three buttons: Primary, Secondary, and Countermeasure. Everything else is icing.

That mission made me nearly fall out of my seat.
Also, a Macross mod would be interesting, with macross missile barrages.
