New 360 Price Drops Announced for Sept 5th -- Arcade now $199, Pro $299, Elite $399
(not sure if this was posted already if so my apologies)
Beginning Sept. 5, Xbox 360 Arcade will retail for the estimated retail price of $199.99, the Xbox 360 console for $299.99 and Xbox 360 Elite for $399.99.
So ... another price drop. 2 bills for the 360 Arcade puts it at the "competing with Wii" level. Not saying they have a chance in hell of catching up with Nintendo's ginormous lead, but this may make a dent this Christmas.
It's cheaper now to sell your premium and buy an elite than it is to buy the 120GB HDD outright.
What the fuck, Microsoft.
edit: my math
400$ for the Elite (Comes with play & charge cable, battery, HDMI cable, transfer cable, 120GB HDD, Wireless Controller, A/V breakout for HDMI use)
180$ for the 120GB HDD
After the price drop, it'll cost you:
380$ to buy a core + 120GB HDD
300$ to buy a core + 20GB HDD
480$ to buy a premium + 120GB HDD (or get more for 400$ by just purchasing an Elite)
(yeah, that's just fucking absurd)
even if you have an Xbox already:
Sell your premium as a core for 200$
Sell the 20GB seperate for 40$
Sell your wireless controller for 20$
Sell the play & Charge cable for 10$
Now get 130$ and spend that on buying a new Elite.
versus paying 180 fucking dollars for the 120GB HDD outright.
Yes, any 360 can have a HDD plugged into it, giving you OXBox compatibility and all the other HDD specific goodies. And all HDDs come with Hexic pre-installed.
Hopefully it will drive down the prices of ALL consoles. I can't help but think that Sony and Nintendo will have to respond considering we're going into Q4.

That doesn't even make sense. Just sell the 20gb for $40 and that drops the 120gb down to 140. 10 Bucks more than the $130 you're saying. And you can get the 120gb way cheaper used on e-bay anyway. And not go through all the shit of selling all that.
I've said it in other threads, but Microsoft has said the sales between the Arcade, Pro and Elite is 20/60/20. So the Arcade might not compete with the Wii too well... then agian, $200 is very mass-market friendly, and I'd guess the mass market is less likely to care about the lack of a hard drive (especially with a memory card thrown in).
Though yeah, it'll be interesting to see what Sony will do. Usually this would result in a price drop, but considering upper management has taken the reigns of major PS3 decisions, they're likely not as savvy in gaming decisions as someone who is in the trenches 100% of the time, and they're desperate to have the thing make a profit, they just might be dumb enough to not price drop.
Wow... the only thing stopping me from getting a 360 now is not having an HDTV for it to look pretty on.
Oh bah, don't let that be the deciding factor. I played on a 27" SDTV for about six months and the games will still be just as awesome in 480i.
This news does actually tempt me to figure out some way of replacing my now-increasingly rare Core unit with a newer Arcade, or maybe putting money toward a bigger hard drive, but I don't know if it's really worth it; I don't really need the HDMI port since I use VGA, and aside from a handful of DREs from Dead Rising my system has been working like a champ. I wouldn't mind something that would be a bit sturdier and a hell of a lot quieter, though.
They finally announce it? This is like the worst kept secret, ever. (And yes I know that they don't dare announce it ahead of time for business reasons.)
Wow... the only thing stopping me from getting a 360 now is not having an HDTV for it to look pretty on.
I played my 360 on an SD set for two years. It still looks damned pretty.... Though I do love my HD set, now There are a few games that I might be hesitant to suggest for SD sets on the 360, but unless you're into JRPGs, or Dead Rising (of which I personally didn't have TOO much trouble with on my SD set), you're gold.
That being said, my launch Core is reeealllly starting to act funny, so with this price drop, HDMI on the new Arcades, and the license transition tool out now, I'm extremely tempted to just boot my old clunker out the door.
I'm interested to see if any stores will offer pack-in bonuses. I know that the $350 Pro consoles were getting a free copy of Gears of War and some other game not too long ago - but they may use the pricedrop as an excuse to strip it back down to just the unit itself.

Too bad they didn't just turn the Arcade into the Pro along with this price drop. HDDs for everyone would have been nice. I'm sort of surprised they didn't move to do that since they are pushing their downloadable movies and other content so heavily. Is a new Arcade owner more likely to start renting movies or buying shows if they have to go purchase a HDD separately? Hell no.

True, but the number of people who go online with their 360s is still relatively low, and there's manufacturing costs to think about. Hard drives can be relatively cheap, but they're not free.

What's the current price for a 360 HD anyway (they're propriatery, right?)? I thought they were still pretty overpriced as far as normal platter HD prices go.
Damn it, every time I see this price drop pop up, I think "Well, I could certainly use the larger HD and HDMI port on the Elite, but then I'd have to get the data transfer kit..." Of course, MS has a form on their site where if you own two consoles, you can order the kit for free. But, then I remind myself that $400 can be spent on other things and my console is currently still working.
So I'm thinking about picking up an arcade model, but don't have an HDTV. So for VGA and HDMI, how does it handle a 1280*1024 monitor? Does it default to a non-widescreen resolution, or black bar the top and bottom, or is it monitor specific?

I thought I read something two months ago that said 60% of 360 owners go online. Seems like it was in a magazine with an article full of pie charts and graphs.

I am surprised they're not sticking large solid state memory cards in there, though. I can go down to the store and get a 2 gig usb memory stick for under ten bucks. They could EASILY make one that goes into the side of the console (where the hard drive goes) rather than bundling it as a memory card. That's gotta be less than five bucks a console, money they'd quickly make back if they would just promote XBLA and XBLM a little more.

The dashboard will use the full resolution and recognize the 1280x1024 res, but you'll get 1280x720 letterboxed inside the 1280x1024 for games.

Just out of curiousity where did you get these numbers? I can't find anything online either. Closest I can find is 12 million Xbox Live accounts and 19 million systems sold worldwide. Obviously that would account for a lot of people creating multiple accounts. It would be nice to see how many paid Gold memberships there have been but I can't find that anywhere.

I just bought a Pro on Saturday.
I forsee alot of 360 Arcade systems under Christmas Tree's this year.
What the fuck, Microsoft.

400$ for the Elite (Comes with play & charge cable, battery, HDMI cable, transfer cable, 120GB HDD, Wireless Controller, A/V breakout for HDMI use)

Lol you'd think so.
Right now used 360 w/ wireless controller and no memory is $199.99 at Gamestop.
It's going down to $179.99.

Solid state is expensive as fuck.
Nope. Still only about 10-20% go online with them.
It's 256MB, actually. Which CC would fill the majority of (considering you don't get 256MB of usable space)
And that brings us to the REAL sticking point of the 360. The Add-On HDD is CHEAP compared to the memory sticks they offer.
$50? For 512MB? Seriously?
180$ for 120GB HDD.
yeah.
Actually, the 120GB dropped to $150 (at least online)
Still a ripoff all things considered, but yeah.
