So one of my friends just had a daughter the other day. I want to get them something but understand that infants grow like a weed and if I get clothes they will most likely be obsolete after 2 hours.
From those that have spawned, what do you recommend, should I just get them clothes or go with something like baby handling equipment (bottles, bibs and all that kind of stuff)?
They're both programmers so anything geeky definitely applies. I was looking for something Star Wars-y but couldn't find anything newborn appropriate. Their baby has a British kind of name, so something that has a UK flag or something on it would work too.
Lastly I'll have to either buy online or have it shipped to them since I'm on the other side of the country so live animals and firearms are probably out.
I would go with clothes most definitely, but in any size other than newborn. ThinkGeek have some cute geeky things for little ones, and in a range of sizes/ages too.
heh think geek is a GREAT site for that sort of thing, as a fellow buccaneer britisher i'm intrigued, what is the kids name? (if i'm not intruding ofc)
pogo mudder on
what a work of art is man, and the most boring choice you can make
No worries. Forgot to mention it earlier, it's Fiona. They've been getting a bunch of people saying, "Oh, like in Shrek!" which is why I'd like to get something with the UK flag on it.
Clothes that are not newborn size are great, particularly onesies since they're going to use a lot of those. Stuffed animals and other cute toys are nice too. Blankets, swaddling cloths, and other things that tend to get dirty but are used constantly are always nice to have more of.
Thinkgeek is good, but there are lots of other places to find fun things for kids. Cafepress has a lot of geek-themed kids stuff.
Also, bath toys are nice to have, as well as books. Bath books that are safe for water and books that have textures on them (like fur) that the baby can touch are really great. Any store with a kids' section will have some (including Amazon).

I've been lolled. I obviously didn't notice that post. Haha.
I bought a bunch of gifts for my nieces/nephews at Psycho Baby (http://www.psychobabyonline.com/). I was living in Chicago at the time so I actually browsed the store, but it looks like pretty much everything they have is available on the website. It's not really computer/tech geeky, but it's awesome. They have a bunch of great CDs that have lullaby versions of rocks songs.
I'd recommend against clothes unless it's insanely cool or pretty cheap, because they will grow out of it quickly.

Such as this 1 year old jacket... FOR A HUNDRED BUCKS.

Not at all. Hell, I don't spend $100 on my own jackets, I'm not gonna spend it for one that'll be useless in a few weeks/months
My kids get the most adorable thrift store clothes for $2 a piece, in good condition.. Retail is just a no no for when they're too little to even remember they were wearing that awesome Grateful Dead jacket. :P
I've never even spent over $25 on my own clothes... heh.
The gift that we most appreciated intially was prepared food that isn't Pizza/Chinese food. Sounds odd, but assuming they're new to parenting they're busy, aren't getting much sleep, and they often have to deal with upset/eating/pooping baby (which means holding baby and thus no leaving of the house); the first thing that goes is a decent diet, you eat whatever crap you have or can pick up on the go or get delivered, or you skip meals and feel faint and irritable.
Consumables we're going through rapidly: diapers (initially 10-12 changes a day), wipes, breast milk baggies, and bac-out (a spray that helps breakdown bacteria in waste -> helps with cloth diapers). Non-consumables that are used a lot: bassinet, breast feeding pillow aid (mybrestfriend, that's not a typo), cloth diapers, burp clothes, towels, and swaddling blankets.
Clothes are cool and all if they are particularly cute (I certainly have favorites that were gifts), but we got shitloads of them as gifts; he's maybe ever worn 1/3rd of all the 0-3 month-sized clothes, and at 2 months he's starting to get too big to fit the 0-3 month clothing.
A useful gift we got was a CD that supposedly simulated womb sounds; I absolutely cannot stand this shit, but it can help settle the baby. Maybe a gift certificate at a local baby-stuff store, if they can pool a couple of these at the same store it helps in bigger ticket items (cribs, travel cribs, bouncy seat thing, carseat and base, stroller, high-chair).
You could try a baby-carrier thing (backpack, frontpack that holds the baby), but honestly, we have 6, and they're all shit (except for the ring sling, which mom likes, but I don't).

Where did he say her name was Fiona?

But yeah, it is a Scottish name.

You can click "Gift guide -> Baby". However, here's some geeky ideas:

Generally the parents will get tons of clothes. Tag blankets are really cool (just search on etsy), as are sets like this:
