Battlefield 2142- Titan Shields are down...

Sooo....

WALKERS

Anyway, just bought this for the Mac a week ago, not knowing what to expect since it's my first battlefield game.

Even though it can't support widescreen for some reason, and the unlocks are frankly bullshit to be honest, I am enjoying this game ALOT.

So, anyone else here playing too?

Also, since this is a fairly old and well known game, I'm unsure whether to do a full-fledged OP or not.

I would think shitty on something that isn't a pro. Every model before that is intergrated graphics so i don't think it would run but the pro's and on at least have an 8600m or something like that. I could be terribly wrong though I don't use mac's.

I enjoyed this game but couldn't get any of my friends roped in as we all already had battlefield 2

I believe EA said they don't support widescreen because it gives those players an unfair advantage over non-widescreen players. Kind of a weak excuse, but there it is.

There are a few "Tactical" servers out there where you have to join a squad and you have to have a headset, those can be really fun.

Also this game was great and we should all play.

there were command line switches to run BF2 in pseudo widescreen, I'd imagine you can do the same with BF2142 since they're the same engine

We should make a general Battlefield PC thread! I picked up the 2 collector's version after not finding my copy for years. I'm so happy there are still servers around for 2.

Never was interested in 2142, and heard mixed things, how is it now? Good community? Balanced well?

I always thought 2142 was a huge improvement over BF2, they fixed a lot of problems and streamlined the game quite a bit....and no fucking jets helped a lot as well.

Funny enough I just reinstalled BF2 earlier this week, and loving it all over again. I've never tried 2142, am I missing much?

    Imac, yo.

It was officially released for the mac too, though only macs with Intel core 2 duo chips could run it.

It's all Cider and buggy, but still plays remarkably well.

It's only the limited screen size that annoys me.

This is pretty much my first battlefield game, so I have no idea what battlefield 2 is like compared to 2142, but apparantly it is much improved.

Plus WALKERS. They're basically walking death.

Which does annoy me when I'm the only engineer around. :x

Good community, I have no idea, but the players that I've played with are pretty decent, which is less than can be said about me. D:

Balanced? Nope, since the early guns are annoyingly much weaker than the latter unlockable ones, but I make do. Still could kill stuff if I do well though.

Oh, and the Titan mode is FUN. Seriously. Great stuff.

I played the fuck out of BF1942.

Played quite a lot of BF: Vietnam.

Played a little BF2 and almost no 2142.

Basically the series started off being all kinds of fun to play, then got more and more involed in 'serious business' like score boards and unlockables as time went on.

I patched this on my PC two months ago and the patch added (shitty) WS support. It didn't add 1680x1050 but I know it had lower res WS support.

I loved the hell out of 2142 when it came out. The unlock system was brilliant and deeper than CoD4 plus you had awesome near future vehicles of death to stomp around in. The squad system was <3 and the commander was actually useful. Man, such a good game.

Yeah, the one thing i don't like about this game is how the unlockables are handled in this game.

They make you start off nearly useless and just charge headlong until you get enough stuff to make other new players useless.

Still fun as hell though. It broke me out of a Civ 4 addiction I had going for awhile there.

This is true in some cases, but not in others.

If you're a good shot you won't need any unlocks for the recon class. The base sniper rifles are better than the Zeller in almost every way. You also get badges for headshots and such that will help level you up faster as well. As for Assault, the only unlock you really need are the defibulators. After that everything is gravy.

But yeah, starting out can be daunting, but you'll have the unlocks you want before you know it. I would personally go for the defibs first, because they can net you a ton of points from revives. And hitting enemies with them, while difficult, is super fun.

Edit: And frag grenades. I forgot that you had to unlock them, but yeah, make those an early priority.

My first unlock was the shotgun based on principle.

And I play Engy mainly because Walker be left unattended are bad and their starting gun is fairly accurate.

Though I only go on if there's a Walker around.

Plus I'm a horrible shot. So recon is hard for me to get into. :(

That's cool, to each his own. I can't really offer any advice for Engy, though. Only time I ever chose to play it was when there was a vehicle fucking with my team and no one else would step up.

I've always loved the infantry combat of Battlefield (2 and 2142 specifically) much more than the vehicle side, so I'm probably biased.

God I love this game. I was playing it again for a bit but I reformatted my computer and haven't reinstalled it yet. I think I should, a friend of mine bought the game because I told him to and he's been wanting to play with me some more.

Also, I'm gonna have to say assault and support are my favorite classes. I love helping my team, either by medpacks and revives or supplying ammo and EMP grenades and turrets. The squad system is great (and the squad leader unlockables are awesome) and like Accualt said the commander is actually useful.

I picked this up on a whim about 4 days ago. I played the everloving shit out of the demo. I am now playing the everloving shit out of the game.

I played on a 64 man Berlin game the other night, and went dedicated medic. Most intense experience I've ever had in a game.

I used to be into this big time, even though it chugged a little on my computer, if i may say so i completely fucking dominated as support.

Oh, and the squad system and commander is great, i have to say i enjoyed this more than BF2.

I'll see if any nearby stores still have it, is there a deal with the expansion packs now?

Does this have any kind of single player mode? I used to enjoy playing 1942 single player, but they seemed to spend less time on it as the series progressed. I remember the AI for 2 being horrible. I doubt they've improved everything, but I really hate playing online.

Uhhh, I think you can set up a map with some bots but it's really awful. I didn't know anybody actually played any of the Battlefield games offline, they're made for online play.

Also, to answer darklite's question, yes there are still quite a few people who play this and plenty of servers to choose from. And to answer Yorker's question, there should be a box with the game and the expansion for really cheap.

I picked up the Deluxe Edition at EB Stop for a paltry $20. My last server search pinged back ~260 servers, almost all of which had people in them. Many of them maxed out at 64 or 48 mans. Still a very active community.

Love this game. Playing as a support, it's one of a very few games where the MG feels like it should. Lots of ammo, best used for suppression fire, and dropping your own ammo recharge means you'll probably never really have to worry about running out.

And Antihippy, if I notice that they enemy team has all the silo's I jump off the Titan and try and take em back. I hate stupid pubbers as much as you do. :D I also don't have a mic but that doesn't stop me from joining a squad, I just call out every enemy I see and use the little wheel thing to convey my wants/needs/orders. One more thing, if you want better servers look for some that enforce teamwork (some require mics and to follow squadleader and commander orders but most just require you to join a squad and work together). Texas Tactical servers (or something along those lines) tend to be my favorites, along with Doorman is God servers.
