PAX08 Swag Cheat Guide

This is going to be a big project for me to update, and as you can guess from my lame OP, I'll probably be too lazy to finish. But it's always fun to try.

I'd like to make a list of every booth and every event that had free swag, and how to get them. Then people can see what they missed out on. So here's what I'd like from you guys. A post with what you got and how you got it.

Here's a good format to go by:

What you got:
What booth/event/day:
How you got it:

And if I ever get around to it, maybe have something next year so people know what's available while they're there.

Here's a couple of the rarer swag items I got.

What you got: Tabula Rasa t-shirt
What booth/event/day: NCSoft booth, while supplies lasted (through Sat?)
How you got it: Free with any NCSoft booth purchase

What you got: choice of blue or red Aion t-shirt
    What booth/event/day: NCSoft booth, Friday
How you got it: Play their demo of Aion & fill out a quick written survey on the game

What you got: Black faux leather Aion snap bracelet
What booth/event/day: NCSoft Community Party (Saturday), Aion PC Freeplay Event (Sunday)
How you got it: Attend NCSoft's community party at Pacific Place on Saturday, or participate in the sneak peek Aion LAN event in PC Freeplay on Sunday

What you got: Code for the PPD Hardsuit costume for City of Heroes
What booth/event/day: NCSoft booth, NCSoft community party
How you got it: Ask nicely. They gave my boyfriend and I a total of 5 codes to share with our supergroup

(Why yes, I do have a thing for NCSoft...)

What a bunch of shit! I was the only person actually asking questions and chatting with a developer for like 30 minutes on Friday. Aion looked amazing, and it was the only game at the expo hall that I had both a) never heard of and b) stopped me in my tracks. Everybody else was just goofing off in the character creator, but I was investigating this new game. Dev dude didn't offer me a survey, or a shirt. Then again, he sounded like he was from Texas and my impression was that he was hired recently as a booth staffer and knew nothing about the game.

    But still.

    That's a bunch of shit.

What you got: Blizzard Worldwide Invitational loot card w/ Tyrael pet and WotLK beta key
    What booth/event/day: Blizzard, Saturday
How you got it: Blizzard held mysterious trivia events once a day each of the three days. They handed out 4-5 loot cards each day. Answer a trivia question about Blizzard stuff, get a card. My question was: "name all 7 Diablo II classes." Harder than it sounds under pressure and on the spot.

What you got: Red Aion t-shirt
    What booth/event/day: NCSoft, Sunday
How you got it: played Aion for a bit, then filled out a survey

    What you got: Champions t-shirt
    What booth/event/day: Champions Booth, Friday
How you got it: signed up for Champions forums at the booth

What you got: Sacred 2 t-shirt
What booth/event/day: Sacred 2 booth, Saturday
How you got it: I took one, like everyone else!

    What you got: Archon t-shirt
    What booth/event/day: Sunday, expo hall
How you got it: Saw someone walking around with a bunch of them, so I followed him. Twenty feet further he started handing them out at random to people in the expo hall, so I got one!

What you got: loads of Magic cards
What booth/event/day: Sunday, Wizards of the Coast booth
How you got it: the Wizards of the Coast guys started randomly giving away theme decks, tournament packs, and boosters close to the end of the day on Sunday. I got a couple hundred cards by just walking past their booth a couple times.

What you got: Magic:TG mouse pads (5 different ones)
What booth/event/day: all weekend at Wizards of the Coast booth
How you got it: walked up and took one from the pile

What you got: Guild Wars Pins, full set
    What booth/event/day: Saturday, NCSoft booth
How you got it: I saw one of the girls at the booth putting these out. I've been trying to get a full set since my first PAX (2004) so I asked how many there were altogether. She told me, then offered me a full set. I also have a few random pins from them that I had picked up before getting the full set - if you're missing one PM me and I'll see if I have it.

What you got: Tabula Raza dogtags, token, and lanyard
What booth/event/day: NCSoft booth, all weekend
How you got it: dogtags and token were available at the demo computers, one of their expo guys offered me the lanyard

What you got: Ninja Town buttons
What booth/event/day: Ninja Town booth, all weekend
How you got it: I played a bit of Ninja Town and grabbed one on Saturday (the sign said one per person). When I went back on Sunday, there were still a bunch there so I asked if I could take more than one. I got 5 different ones.

What you got: 2 Aion slap braclets
    What booth/event/day: NCSoft booth, Sunday
How you got it: I was cuffed on both wrists while trying Aion for a second time on Sunday. The NCSoft people were super nice and having a lot of fun whenever I was at their booth.

I also got a free plushie from one of the booths but I can't remember who it was and I'm too lazy to go grab the plushie from the other room. I had to sign up for their forums or whatever to get it.

On top of that, I have demo codes and CDs for many different games. I could have grabbed a Pirates of the Burning Sea t-shirt again, but I have one from 2006 (I got it for jumping up and down in line at their demo party, ahaha), and one from 2007. I really wanted one of the "Getting Booty" shirts, but they said they don't have smaller sizes because they thought only guys would want that shirt... I kinda wanted a PotBS tankard, but they must have given them out when I went to a panel.

Not too bad, but last year's haul was much better - I easily had eight or ten t-shirts last year on top of a bunch of pins, buttons, stickers, pens, caffeinated mints, lollipops, Magic:TG cards and mousepads, Heroclix miniatures, and a notebook. Of course last year was much less crowded so there was less competition.

This year you certainly had to put more effort into getting the swag, but that's only fair since the guys in the expo hall are there to get us to play their games. If you want free stuff you need to show that you're interested enough in their games/products to get it.

Meh. I just walked around and got the stamps. Took me like 10 minutes. I wasn't even interested in anything EA was demoing at the show, but Archon is one of my favorite C64 games, and was one of EA's earliest successful titles. I asked the guy at the booth if this meant they were doing a remake of the original, but he had no idea. Further research suggests there was something in the works but it was canceled, so they were probably just getting rid of excess merchandise. Bummer. Oh, and they started just giving the shirts away on Sunday, so I got a second one. Comparing them later, one appears to have printing that is bright white while the other is printed in a darker shade of gray. I'm not sure if that's just a fluke of the printing process or if it's a play on the whole "light and dark" theme from the game.
