Hey, basically my problem is that my computer seems to think that my graphics driver is out of date, but i know its not cause i downloaded it a while ago and have the file on my computer. Recently my power supply blew and i had to buy a new one and that's when this trouble started. basically when i try to run any application that requires my graphics card to do something i'm told to get new drivers (if i continue without getting them my comp crashes and restarts). when i do re-download the new drivers from the NVidia site, i install them and restart my comp as normal. But when my computer turns back on the resolution and colour quality are at the lowest possible and can't be improved. if i try to run anything like spore or WoW at this point my computer acts as though theres no card installed and refuses to run the applications. however the whole time this is going on my graphics card is still listed under 'display' when i run DxDiag.
are my current drivers horribly corrupted? if so any ideas on how to fix them?
also would a programme like "driver genius" sort my problem, i don't mind paying the cost.
-thanks for any advice let me know if you need me to provide more infomation.
what a work of art is man, and the most boring choice you can make
But for now:

Did you buy a beefy enough new model? That 8800GTX sucks a lot of juice. Also, did you plug it into the card properly? :P
Post your make/model of PSU, and also make doubly sure everything's connected to the right places.

Firsly I would just do a un-install of the drivers then re-install them.
Go to the device manager. To get there go to Start>Control Panel>System then when that windows opens up go to the tap that says hardware and click on Device manager. In that window you will see all the different components for your system. Go to display adapter and expand the group. Right click on the device in that group and go un-install.
Then restarted the machine and proceed to re-install, but re-install with freshly downloaded drivers from the nvidia website.
Also if you don't see the system icon within the control panel window go to the right of that window and click 'switch to classic vew'.
If that doesn't work, i'll give you some other stuff try. hopefully this should do it though
yo okay, that whole restarting thing didn't work. when i restarted i just got the same crappy res an unable to improve it.
i know the wires are all arranged in the right way and power supply is more than enough to handle the GTX despite its juice sucking:P, i just bought the most powerful one available, i don't have the details to hand though.
dixon, when i did what you said and uninstalled the card, i noticed that multiple copies of the existing drivers were still ion my comp. Also there are numerous copies of anything to do with nvidia in my system 32 folder. i have tried to deleted the duplicate files before but this hasn't worked.
keep the advice coming:)

I forsee a facepalm moment. Number of watts doesn't mean jack if it has the 12V rail split four ways, or if it's a SuperHappyFunBee 750W from Billy Bob's Bait Shop And Computer Emporium.
Open the side of your case, find the label on your PSU that has a shitton of voltages and amperages on it, it'll have 3.3V, 5V, 12V, etc. Find the "amps" or "current" value for each. For your 8800GTX, I'd say you need a single rail at 30A or so, depending on what else is in that machine.

okay thanks but i dont ahve any screw drivers to hand, i can roughly see the numbers that your saying through some see-through parts on my case, but i can see like 30 numbers and i don't know what ones you need. also my friend and i have the exact same power supply and the exact same graphics card and it works fine for him. hes a bit mroe in the know on the hardware than me, and assured me that this power supply was more than enough for my comp.
-thanks anyway
