hey guys, me and a couple friends have been wanting to start a podcast for a while now. All our lives have settled down for the most part and we feel we are ready to do it. problem is... we have no equipment outside of our computers and a few of us aren't really in driving distance. so my question is what websites can you guys recommend that would help us get started. and what software/hardware you guys have heard is good or can recommend from personal experience. Also in terms of music playing and intro songs what copyright issues would we have to deal with or take care of?

I made a couple of podcasts for a class in my senior year of high school. In terms of equipment we had fairly decent microphones, it depends on how high quality you want this podcast to be, and we used a free program called Audacity which allows you to do the basic stuff with editing recordings and I believe you can add music and such in as well, though I am not sure if you can fade it in.

Yeah, audacity has pretty much all you want for sound editing. Most podcasts I listen to tend to just use skype to chat to each other with one person recording the conversation and then editing it together with music etc.

The most important bit is just making sure everyone has a decent mic, and that the sound levels are balanced. Get together before hand rather than having a terrible sounding first episode and just have a quick run through. Other than that it's just common sense, people shouldn't talk over other people, dead space is annoying, and unless your off topic wanders are fantastic, try and keep it structured and not too long unless you're incredibly interesting.
