So usually, I'm not bothered by the fact that I'm losing my hair. It started thinning when I was 17 and has progressively gotten worse over the years. About 7 years ago I went the scorched earth route and started shaving my head. I've got a good scalp, no ridges or bumps so I'm able to pull it off without problems but today there were some people talking about some new pajama trend in fashion and one of the models had hair just like I used to.
Ok, I know he's a model, and the fact that he has hair helps with that. But that's beside the point. I just miss having flowing locks. I miss feeling the wind in my hair. I miss getting haircuts. I miss washing my hair. I miss brushing my hair. I just miss having hair.
I know I won't go the hair club for men route. I don't even know where they'd get hair from to staple to my head other than possibly my chest or back or.... so yeah. It's not going to happen. If I grew it out I'd look a lot like George Costanza (from the later episodes).
So what causes baldness, is there any way to grow your hair back? Can I expose myself to some kind of crazy mutagenic radiation to get a full head of hair that's actually my hair? I mean, why can a baby grow new hair follicles or whatever and a grown man can't?
I feel your pain man. My own hair is thinning in the front, and though I found a decent hairstyle, it's still a boring one. I get jealous when I see friends experiment with their hair, or see people with good looking haircuts.
My advice is just to accept it. Yeah, you could spend money on treatments that would make a slight difference..but do you really want to?
I'm the same situation--if you feel like having some hair, just have the barber cut it with the #1 length clippers. Even guys with thinning hair look good with a fuzz-cut. Better yet, you can just buy some clippers at Target or Walmart for about $25 and do it yourself.
Most male baldness is caused by hormones. Excess testosterone (more accurately, DHT) causes the lifespan of your little guys to shorten until they are dormant almost all the time. Treatments like Rogaine may reverse some of the effects, but only as long as you use it and even then only for about 7 years.
If baldness were easier to fix than Hair Club for Men, there'd be a lot less bald dudes out there. I haven't started losing yet, but the genetics do not have a positive outlook for me in the long run. Plus, i happen to know I have an ass-ugly scalp already.
I hope I don't lose my hair any time soon. I'm actively trying to grow it out. But it seems a little thin on top and I worry about it pretty regularly. I'm not sure how I would react to losing it entirely. Most assuredly not in a good way.
That said, most hair-restoration options seems less-than-reliable as best. Many of them fall this || short of hiring Billy Mays as their spokesman.

Don't worry about it. Chicks dig bald guys :winky:
There are many routes for gaining hair back, a good first step is to avoid cutting it for a month or two, to see where it still grows in.
Hair loss is tied to testosterone production, and it affects mainly the hair at the front and top of the head, the hair on the side and the back is rarely affected much until older age.
There are hormonal treatments, IE rogain and whatnot, or is that a steroid? They do work for some people, but it becomes a never ending habit.
Hair transplants take hair follicles from the back and sides of the head, and transplant them onto the top areas. The testosterone does not affect them, so they grow normal, and you could brush the hell out of it.

Thanks for the info, I really wasn't sure how or where the hair came from in one of these transplants. I had assumed they were getting it from other *ahem* regions.
Is there any way to like, grow new follicles and some way to reduce the testosterone making it to the scalp so the new hair doesn't go dormant or die? I'm guessing that things like rogaine and such neutralize the testosterone but if the hair is gone then it's gone.
Also, it seems to me that baldness seems much more pronounced over the last 40 years than it used to. Has there been any research done linking things like hormones in food (i.e. KFC chickens and McD's beef) to contributing to baldness? We were debating this a couple weeks back and somebody mentioned something about girls developing earlier.
Mine started thinning around a year ago. My hairline doesnt look like its receding much, but it is very thin. People cant notice it because i have it long and parted so it covers the hairline. I feel like shit about it sometimes, but really, there are a lot of people in the same position. We just dont notice it until they get really bad. It seems like you're confident with a shaved head so that is good.
Oh, and ignore the whole propecia and hair transplants. Unless your career requires you to have a full head of hair, it is really just pathetic. Propecia messes with your hormones and with transplants you need to keep going back as the rest of your hair thins out.
ALSO, if you have male pattern baldness, theres no stopping it. If you take drugs, it only reduces the rate of your hair loss

Just so you know there are those on the opposite side of the spectrum. I consider myself incredibly lucky that I have a full head of hair, but it grows so fucking fast that it does become extremely irritating. I have to get my hair cut every 10 days. If I could I would gladly share my hair with you because believe me I have more than enough to go around.
I started losing mine about 3 years ago. That sucked. I was 20, so I couldnt even drink the hair loss sorrows away (at least in public) but think about it this way, Bruce Willis doesnt have hair and he's fucking awesome. Think about half the NBA. Its becoming much less stranger to see someone going to the Yul Brynner route.
I actually don't mind the look too much, I could never be happy with my hair so getting almost totally short doesnt bother me. (I still have some remains and its not as noticable when its a quarter of an inch).
I mostly just worried about girls, is that a problem, because there are solutions to that that don't involve hookers or being rich. I mean at least youre more aerodynamic.
Being Aerodynamic makes you run like a speeding bullet. It is that awesome.
I feel your pain, I started balding last year and I'm 22 years old. I guess its kinda okay, its good to be able to wake up in the morning and not have to fix your hair. I get my head shaved every three weeks or so. Not completely shaved though, it would be more like a number one. Its purely genetic in my family.
I just get on with it. There's no point dwelling on something you can't change.
Always remember the guys who cling to the combover look a million times more pathetic than the guys who shave. Who actually don't look pathetic at all.

Yeah, I'll agree that it's much more acceptable for a guy to be bald now a days. Particularly if you're white. Back in the 80's if you were less than 30, white, and shaved your head you had to be worried about being associated with being a neo-nazi or skinhead. Now it's much more accepted. I see plenty of guys in business suits now with shaved heads.
Having to choose between the Costanza or a shaved head, I'd go shaved. If you can pull off the Picard look and have that same kind of kick ass Captain persona then go for it. Since I tend to dress much more blue-collar on the weekends I sometimes can pull off the biker look.
As for the ladies. A lot like the bald head. Some will, some won't. For the most part, if you're losing it, try and accept it and roll with it. That's what I've done and do most of the time. Just yesterday and still today, I'm pining for my hair.
Thanks for posting that video. I don't often feel down about the fact that I'm in the same camp as you lot, but every now and again there's just a little bit of a dismayed feeling, and that cheered me right up.
I can definitely reccomend going with a #1 length on the shaver if you feel like having a little vestigal fuzz. Still looks good, and you can get that nice tactile sensation if you run your hand over your head or whatever.
Great video. Definitely makes me feel better, especially to know that Patrick Stewart didn't go so brazenly into his baldness.
As for those that are thinking about shaving your head... If you've got a full head of hair, then damn you. Damn you to hell for taking what you have for granted. Enjoy it and enjoy it well.
If you're going bald, then I'd say to take one thing into consideration. Once you shave it, it will take time to grow back in. There's definitely no way I could ever grow out what I used to have. It's too late and for me once I started down the path of shaving my head I realized I could never go back. So if you can still get a couple more miles out of your hair with dignity then enjoy it. If it's time for the razor, then so be it.
BTW, I'm actually feeling much better about this whole thing now. I still would like to have my old hair back but I'm not obsessing about it like I was.
I polled several female friends and the consensus is that we all like fuzz-cuts. They're less high-maintainence than keeping it shiny at all times and the fuzz is fun to touch.
Seriously, balding guys, don't sweat it. Bald > long, creepy Ren-Faire hair any day of the week.
Hey, at least you shave your head. That's better than going with the balding look...or for god's sake a comb over. Hopefully you'll grow more comfortable with it. More and more people who are balding go with the shaved head. I think it looks good more so than not. Take pride in it and just work your look around it. It's all apart of accepting who you are. Embrace it. Life is too short to lose confidence over things you can't change.
Also, when we see bald people, do we give a shit? Hell no. We dont think about it. As long as you're healthy, and keep kit, everyone will look good with a shaved head. Its the natural shape of our heads. Thats why i dont car ethat im loosing it. If im anything like my dad and his brothers, I've got about another year or two with long hair. Then probably another three years really short. Than i'll have to go full shave.
I think its harder if you didn't tend to it while it was occuring. My uncle (who is in his mid-late 60s!) tried the propecia stuff where you rub it into your scalp and it actually worked, but I dont know if this was a fluke or what.
If you are buff though, or just somewhat built. Ya being bald looks good. If you have a kiddy facec, its not so great. But not many people have that.
Jesus! At that stage i wouldnt care. Id be so happy if i last till im 30 with hair.
But rogain and propecia can help slow down MPB to a point where your hair folicles can re-grow hair. But, it will become an obsession that you will, eventually, tire of. You would get to the point and want to stop, bt know that any hair you have held onto will fall out in a short amount of time. I think its a bad habbit. Also, there are a million worse things then male pattern baldness.

Rogaine? It's neither hormonal nor a steroid.
The only hormonal treatment approved for hair loss in the US is Propecia.

I say almost everyone looks better than you would think with shaved or super short hair. Some girls can even pull off a buzzcut.

Get Jacked.
Muscley men with bald heads are like PB&J that shit just works. So if you are losing your hair bic it and hit the gym.
Also possibly grow a handlebar mustache.

Haha...I used to work with a retired Navy SEAL with a shaved head and a mustache. He looked like a guy you did not want to fuck with.
