DVD Writer question

So I have an IBM T42p laptop and it has a dvd/cd writer combo on it. For the past couple of days, I cannot get it to read any dvds or cds. I suspect it may be toast (laser head dead?). Is there anyway I can confirm this before I go out and buy an external dvd writer? I fricking went out and bought Adobe CS and can't install it because of the POS. Or any other reasons it is acting this way?
