What are the most fun and easiest to play WW I/II games you know of?
My mother-in-law loves World War I and II and has read basically every book that exists on the topic. She has expressed mild interest in playing a game based on that time period.
She is about 60 and is an almost competent computer user. She like to play peggle, can get around the internet okay and can take directions on how to use the computer with out getting flustered.
I know there are tons of WW I/II games out there but I need help finding one that is both enjoyable but also easy to play or explains it self really well.

I don't know, I always found that Call of Duty 2 wasn't all too hard, and I loved Battlefield 1942 but it's a little more complex. She might enjoy the historical parts of Battlefield since it focuses on the strategy and the meaning of each individual battle. Call of Duty is slightly more pulpy and harder as in difficulty but less complex than BF1942.
The question I have to ask is would your mother have a problem shooting a nazi in the face?
As far as easy to play goes, nothing's even in the same ballpark as Peggle. I guess the easiest ones to play that I can think of might be:
- Axis & Allies: The two older versions are turn-based, and the newer one is an RTS. I don't know how hard these are, but the board game they're based on isn't too difficult to get into.
- Panzer General: This was an easy-to-learn turn-based strategy game back in the day. It's a DOS game, though.
- The Commandos games: The controls are easy enough, at least, more or less like a point-and-click adventure/puzzle game.
- Silent Storm: I guess turn-based translates as easier to learn to me.
- Steel Panthers: One more turn-based strategy game for the list.
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis: Probably not exactly what she's looking for, but it has Nazis in it
NOT the commandos games. Those games are crazy impossible.
They are, but I was thinking the controls might be easier to figure out than, say, a first person shooter or a RTS where she would have to learn all the hotkeys and a build order. But yeah, very hard.
On easy. You don't really need to know the build order or hot keys in CoH. And the focus on small units might make it easier, but the opening couple of missions are quite tough.
Memoir '44 is considered one of the best war-based board games. 2-players only, unless you go crazy with the expansions.
Yes.
And, might I add, YES.
Because of the command cards, you are limited in what units you can activate in a given turn (usually around 3). That way each turn isn't overwhelming and you get a nice mix of strategy and luck.
WW2 buffs (aka me) are generally into more realistic WW2 games, which of course aren't easy to play, but if she gets over the hurdle of "this is not what the war was like," Call of Duty + CoD2 probably aren't that tough to pick up and play, if they're on easy.
We need more more details about your mother. Has she ever played ANY first person shooters EVER? And as someone else mentioned, would she have a problem with shooting a nazi in the face?
If the answer to the first question is "No", then I would suggest FPS territory is not the place to go for someone with a 60 year-old non-gamer's reflexes.
Company of Heroes... maybe. As much as I want to recommend it, it might be a little fast-paced later on. Maybe on easy difficulty.
You might think i'm being sexist, ageist or whatever, but have you ever seen a non-gamer, a hardcore non-gamer, pick up a mainstream game and try to play for the first time? It is painful (this is an understatement), and can turn them off games as a whole.
World War isn't exactly the kind of subject I'd describe as fun or light. Are you sure your mom in law wants to play a First Person Shooter or Real Time Strategy?

As awesome as it would be if your mother in law was kicking ass at a FPS or RTS, I doubt it is going to happen.
As far as WWI goes, though, there really aren't any good games out there. I guess months of trench warfare and mustard gas don't make a good game.
I have Stratego. Would anyone like to play Stratego?
*vomit*
Or go buy the Recon sourcebook and have your GM build scenarios that are all WWI/II based.
Visit a french brothel. Kill Hitler. BE Hitler!
Yes.

Based on true story too if I remember correctly, plus it had some interesting historical/bonus stuff and such as you completed the levels.
"No.. I was wrong. This must be what going mad feels like."

It unfortunately also swerves wildly into "not remotely historically accurate" grounds when it gets into all the
The beginning of the game is really fun and not too hard.
