I'm looking for recommendations for a TV series for my Dad to watch. My parents have just moved to an area with only one tv channel that's not particularly entertaining, so they've been gobbling through dvds.
He really enjoyed Firefly, Deadwood and West Wing. He likes a lot of Britcom (Red Dwarf, Black Books), but they tend to have short seasons. He happily watches things like Buffy and X-Files, but I think that was because we were watching it and he enjoys making snide comments (and secretly enjoys the shows - I caught him skipping ahead in Buffy because he "wanted to know what happens", so...). He also watches things like Law and Order and Numbers when they're on TV, but I don't think he'd sit down to watch an entire season.
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
Blackadder (Britcom)
IT Crowd (Britcom)
House
The Lost Room(a mini-series)
EDIT: Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey(stars of Black Books) also have some stand up shows on DVD which your dad will like if he's a fan of there show.Praticly the same on stage as they are on screen.
Dexter
Extras (britcom by the guys that did the original British 'The Office')
Scrubs ('coz everybody loves Scrubs :-))
Prison Break always kept me interested...not sure if it'd work for your parents?
Lost
24
prison Break (series one only)
The Shield
The Wire
Band of Brothers
Generation Kill
Heroes
The Office (British one is a must - I hear the US one is ok too, but the UK one is golden)
Extras
Scrubs
Dexter
Psych
Dexter
Monk
Dexter
Heroes
Lost
Terminator series
See the pattern?
Dexter is one of THE best shows that has come on TV in a really long time.

Third, fourth and fifth for Arrested Development.
Sopranos would be a good drama if he like Deadwood.

Seriously. It is like the fine arts of television. Each season builds a part of the city of Baltimore. If you got a good head and good taste, you will absolutely adore The Wire.

Coincidentally, all three seasons are online, for free, at hulu.com. I probably sound like an advertising plant, but this site is fantastic.
Also, The Office is a fantastic show.

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Also the British version of Coupling is excellent. I've not seen the US remake though.
"Oh my god! Ive got some fucking jaffa cakes in my coat pocket!"
Very funny show
I thought Coupling was supposed to be a remake of Friends?
Peep Show is another good one, but good luck finding it in Region 1.
Heathens.
I'll toss It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in there.
I'm going to second this. My girlfriend's parents ate that show up like it was candy with tits.
And don't forget studio 60 on the sunset strip.
