Restoring functionality to an old Sony Vaio without Sony

So, yeah, I've got my sisters old FS series Sony Vaio. She'd fucked the software with malware the only thing for it was to wipe the slate clean. Which worked swell - I used my own XP home install disk with the key for the laptop and everything went swimmingly.

However, there are a few problems - I really, realy don't want any of the Sony software on this thing.

But, basically, this means I'm missing a lot of functionality I'd like back, if alternatives are possible.

For example (and really, this is the most important one) - I'd like to be able to control the brightness level to save battery life. Because, currently, it's defaulting to highest and the battery isn't lasting long at all. The same is true of anything the fn keys would be used for though - they aren't working atm.

Obviously, I wouldn't be adverse to using sony drivers - but I don't want applications running in the background. However, the sony site is a nightmare to work out.

You could try downloading the drivers and seeing if they can be extracted from the installer using WinRAR or similar, then installing via the Device Manager.

But it sounds like your Fn keys are controlled by Sony's software, which sucks for you unless you can find any kind of alternative software out there: Fn inputs should just be sending keyboard inputs into the system, so maybe some kind of hotkey automation software might work. AutoHotKey is an example, but needs a bit of scripting on your part.
