Well, I'm watching Dr. Phil here, and you might call me gay, but they're having a pretty decent debate between celebrities and other African American people about the use of the N word.
Mooney and a couple other black actors and comics are on alongside a white radio talk show host and they're debating the use of the word.
What's your take on it? I know we have a pretty low number of black people on the forums, but it's wroth contest. Is the word powerful? Is it a word that has any power behind it if you don't give it power? Is it a word that can be used as a term of endearment?

I think the fact that you can say every other offensive word pretty much on these forums and yet not that one is somewhat ridiculously retarded. I know its like, policy handed down from the guys themselves or something, but its still stupid.
But then, the idea that any word can be offensive is laughably stupid. How you use it on the other hand is a different story.
not sure if it's on youtube so I'll just post the text
There is one very specific time white people can use the n-word. If it's between 4:30 and 4:45 am on Christmas Morning and you are driving out in the snow to get your kid the last Transformers toy at Walmart, and just as you lay hands on it a black man hip checks you, steals the toy, kicks you when you're on the ground, Riverdances on your face and pisses on you, you are allowed to yell

when dealing with a wide range of diverse people you have to add a weight to the words, you can't judge all words equally
and, in today's society, the n-word is pretty damn heavy
Like every other bad word in the language it runs entirely on context, I think
I personally don't use it (mostly because I'm a pussy about accidentally offending someone), but some of my old college mates used it with each other (some black, but mostly white), and everyone knew they meant no harm so it was all good there
That all being said, although I don't mind the absolute ban I wouldn't mind seeing it go away, either. I think we're mature enough to use the word only when contextually appropriate (read: damn near never)
Then again I could be a bit of an optimist vOv

I think the word is only as bad as you want to make it, but then I grew up in southern California and have never dealt with real racism on a scale larger than a few individuals.
I also think that there are so many other words that could be used and people who do use it use it consciously and with intent. As opposed to say 'fuck' which I pretty much use unconsciously in my day-to-day speech.
Talking about it like seriously is almost always the most awkward thing.
One of my classes was about social profiling and it came up, and talking about it with a lecturer and a fairly large group, ugh, it was so awkward and weird
to be honest i don't like any sort of ethnic slurs. cultural jokes are one thing, everyone has them and everyone makes fun of their own culture. but those single words (mostly asian for whatever reason) and the n word just sounds retarded to me and i don't think it should be acceptable for anyone to use them. being part of the community that is typically offended does not give you a magical license to okay the word. what, just because another black person says it, it's not offensive anymore? get the fuck out.
The reason it is banned here is not necessarily because of the word's weight and gravitas alone, it was that in combination with an absurd abuse of it's usage. More so than any other of the offensive words we use.

We have a fucking idiot supervisor working at my UPS hub. Tall, lanky, goofy white kid. Apparently he thinks he's "hood", walks around rapping to himself, etc. Tosses the N word out there once in a while, but only in front of other white people, and it's usually the version with the "a" at the end as opposed to the "er".
One day he slipped. Was giving a black kid on my belt a bunch of shit since he was backed up a little bit, and told him "Just load your truck, n*****."
The kid punched the shit out of him. Actually knocked him off the dock. And then turned and continued doing his work.
He was reprimanded and was allowed to keep his job. The sup was suspended for two weeks.
This word is stupid. Racial slurs are always such pointless things.
Besides, the word is dead and buried
I don't know how you can say that.
There are several generations of people alive, today, who were attacked by dogs, arrested, beaten, only because they were black. People who lived through apartheid in America.

There are plenty of black people around who remember what the word meant BEFORE RAP MUSIC EXISTED.

Of course I'm being hypocritical because I laugh so hard at the Italian jokes leveled at The Nothing.

and then there's the people going "BLACK HOLE IS A RACIST TERM"
fuck those people
he has a great bit about when it's okay to use it

In that case, I nominate Wiggin for the best infraction for using the new N word.

w-what
are you serious about the black hole thing

As if the African American community, as cohesive as any community may be nowadays, has not settled on a definitive opinion on the word.
I don't know... I avoid it because I don't really feel like I have much right bandying it about.
Besides, the word is dead and buried
Yeah, some people really think that.
No, it's really not.
it'd be like opening a floodgate
If it were called the Black Soul
now that would be racist. It would even capitalize on a rhyming and rapping stereotype.
edit: possibly the Blacks' Soul
I know I know. But I really did like that whole ceremony they did as a gesture. It would've been great if it actually held
if i was, i don't remember it
...
Does that make me a racist?
ahahahahaha
