Motherboard Question

XzeanXzean Registered User regular
So i've looked all over and was hoping the guys here could help me out.

I currently have a P4 3.0 Ghz and am wanting to upgrade to a core 2 duo for WAR. Thing is, I don't know if my motherboard is compatible, or even what size socket it has. I've looked all over the internets and can't seem to find any solid information on it, and unfortunately I don't have the box or manual for it.

Anyway here is all the info CPUz brings up.

ASUSTek
Model: P5LD2 Rev 1.xx
Chipset: Intel i945G/GZ Rev A2
Southbridge: Intell 82801 (ICH7)
Sensor: Winbond W83627EHF

Thanks guys for any help.

    P5LD2

    AI Lifestyle Series
    - Intel 945P chipset
    - Intel LGA775 Pentium 4 CPU
    - Intel® Core™2 Extreme / Core™2 Duo Ready
    - Dual-Core CPU Ready
    - FSB 1066/800/533
    - DDR2 667/533/400
    - Marvell PCIe Gbit LAN
    - WiFi-TV (Optional)

*Only PCB R2.0(or higher) support Intel® Core™2 processor

    from the manufacturers site

there is a possibility you could overclock the FSB and drop in an older core 2, but i dont know if thatll work.

Is PCB meaning the speed of my FSB? Otherwise I have no idea what that means. I've seen that before and couldn't find out what it ment, or if my version of the mobo has it.

My FSB is the 800, btw.

PCB means printed circuit board if i remember right. aka the version of your motherboard.

1.xx doesnt fully support core 2s.

Ah and so since I have 1.xx, no go. You mentioned something about overclocking the FSB to force compatibility? How does that work/how risky is it?

Since Dunadan hasn't responded yet: Based on the manufacturers info that has been posted here I'd buy a new motherboard along with the CPU if I were in your shoes.

As far as getting a core 2 to work on your motherboard, I don't think the odds are in your favor.

well (from what i understand) you boost the FSB up to the 266? required to run c2d and then put in a 65nm processor. i saw it as a theory in a different board a while back and while it seems like it could work, i wouldnt do it.

honestly you can get a 45nm supporting C2D mobo for at a minimum 80 bucks... which means you can get a 120 E7200 and have a 200 dollar upgrade. only problem is that you HAVE to reinstall windows and reformat your HD (unless you know how to registry hack which i dont suggest). all depends on how necissary a better processor is to what you are doing.

Yeah looks like that is how it is going to have to be.

Would you mind linking me to this 120 E7200? I assume it is some sort of processor but I have no idea.

And thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

    E7200

An example of a motherboard that compliments this CPU

EDIT: I guess I should just leave this thread to Dunadan, he's got it covered. But the forums are slow today, and I'm sooo bored at work right now.
